People 65 and older face an increased risk from seasonal flu. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 90% of seasonal flu-related deaths in the United States and 60% of hospitalizations occur among patients in this age group. The flu vaccine can help protect against the virus and prevent dangerous health complications.

The Campaign: Funding Flu Shots for Elderly Patients

If this Grassroots campaign raises $400, then The Ruth U. Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center and the Brinton Family Health and Health Center can provide flu shots for 20 seniors. The shots can both save the lives of vaccinated people and help improve the general health of the overall population by reducing the spread of communicable diseases.

The Ruth U. Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center and the Brinton Family Health and Health Center

Hurricane Katrina dealt a severe blow to the health care infrastructure in the New Orleans area. In response to the crisis, a group of Tulane physicians developed a new model of health care to meet the needs of the sick, wounded, and displaced. The group worked out of tents, mobile vans, and in shelters to ensure that people received adequate care. At the first of the six sites eventually created, one doctor even set up a card table with a box of supplies and an ice chest to keep tetanus vaccines cold.

Today, The Ruth U. Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center and the Brinton Family Health and Health Center continue to provide comprehensive primary care, women’s health care, and chronic-disease management for local community members, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. In keeping with the organization's early principles, the center uses a team-based approach to treating patients at an easily accessible location. The organization develops replicable models of care for underserved populations and collaborates with educational institutions to train other health care professionals to use its methods.
