- $20 for entry for one in the Ugly Sweater Run Philadelphia (up to a $39 value)
The Ugly Sweater Run kicks off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, at Fairmount Park. Clad in their gaudiest holiday finery, runners chart an untimed 5K course fueled by hot chocolate before race officials dole out wacky awards. Each entry includes a custom vintage knit hat, unlimited hot chocolate, two hard ciders or lagers for runners age 21+, and a mustache; kids younger than 8 race for free. Each runner is encouraged bring along a new toy to put under the race's huge Christmas tree and the haul is later donated to the local Toys for Tots chapter.
The Ugly Sweater Run
For an athletic event, The Ugly Sweater Run has an unusually cozy aesthetic. Participants are not only encouraged to wear horrendous holiday sweaters, but to also rock the lushest facial hair they can grow. For those who can't grow their own, a fake mustache is included in every race entry, making for swag that is as good a conversation starter as a T-shirt that reads "please start a conversation with me."
The course itself carries on that fun vibe, too. Winding through city streets and local parks, the 5K route is dotted with hydration stations that dole out hot chocolate. Holiday music, a giant Santa inflatable, and snow blowers help to set the festive mood. At the finish line, participants warm their insides to another degree with lagers and hard cider while officials dole out awards for the best and worst sweaters, extreme beards, and mustaches with personality. There's one final ingredient to boosting the holiday spirit: helping others. The Ugly Sweater Run benefits Toys for Tots branches across the country, asking its guests to bring a new toy with them to help their local chapter.
