In a Nutshell

Donations help to provide toys to children at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago whose families are staying at the Ronald McDonald House

The Fine Print

The Issue: Holiday Presents for Hospitalized Kids

For families staying at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, shopping for the holidays can become an additional stress rather than a joy. Toy Box Connection helps alleviate this burden by creating a miniature "toy store" at the Ronald McDonald House, where parents can easily select a donated toy to give to their sick child.

The Campaign: Providing Toys for Hospitalized Children

If this Grassroots campaign raises $250, then Toy Box Connection can set up a "toy store" at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, where 10 parents can select a new or gently used donated toy for their hospitalized children. Each additional $25 raised will be used to provide a toy for another hospitalized child.

Toy Box Connection

Toy Box Connection aims to help all children receive the gift of a toy or a book year-round, serving as the connection between the families and businesses that donate these items and the children who need them. After accepting new and gently used toys, Toy Box Connection sorts and cleans them at its warehouse, then redistributes the toys and books to its partner nonprofit organizations. From there, the items are given directly to the children in need. Special projects include donating toys to children in the hospital, families of returning troops, and children in special needs or foster camps.

The Groupon Guide to: Buying a Car

Buying a car is an intimidating experience. The man looks at you. He wants to sell you the car for more than it is worth. Beat the man. Beat the man until he cries with these tips:

  • Always drive the car. This will let you make sure that it is free of the five most deadly species on earth and that it has a floor and the dealer isn’t Flintstone-ing you (a technique wherein the dealer sells you a car with no floor named after Flint Stone, an early dishonest car salesman).

  • Immediately list everything you hate about the car. It has a nick here, a dent there. It is the same color as your rival’s eyes. You looked at them in a field. You were the last man to look at those eyes. Your rival sold you a lemon. He is gone.

  • When the dealer says the price, scream. Oh, scream until your nose bleeds and all of creation fears your machinations. Oh, scream your voice raw, honey. Good heavens!

  • Ride away on your bicycle. This was good practice for when you really decide to buy a car.

Be sure to scream as fiercely as a newborn babe or warrior brave. Scream with all your grit, sweet honey.
