Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
We motivate our students in two ways. First, we bring the routine to the student's level. Regardless of where you start on your transformation there is always a level of intensity that will be appropriate. Even if you [have] very limited strength, flexibility, or range of movement, there is a yoga workout that will help you make progress. Second, the benefits of a yoga practice can be felt immediately. After each class students will experience increased mental clarity, enhanced mood, and an overall energized and revitalized feeling that stays with them.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
In yoga practice we have a saying. "Today, just be where you are, and let that be enough." Yoga is a gentle form of transformation that changes the whole body, including the mind. The major changes (like weight loss) that are experienced are not the point of practicing but rather a side effect of the practice. The point of the practice is the purification of the body and mind in their current forms. Continuing this purification leads the student down a path where the body and mind become healthy and thus beautiful. Health is not a goal. It is a way of life.
Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
Music can definitely be a tool for setting the tone of the class. In our more intense classes we will play more upbeat music, and in classes that are geared more toward relaxation we will play more relaxing music.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Yoga is ultimately a meditation. In our busy world we often forget to take time to allow our minds to relax. Many people cannot even begin to quiet their minds. Yoga teaches the techniques necessary for learning focus, concentration, and meditation. The mind is involved in every aspect of life. Developing the mind's abilities will therefore benefit every aspect of life.
