Teams take Portland's streets to compete in the Urban Goose Chase—from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 1—which challenges the adventurous competitors to race the clock to complete as many wacky and daring missions as they can throughout the city. The chase is a technological twist on the classic scavenger hunt: using the Urban Goose application for an iPhone or Android mobile device, the scavenger-hunt organizers beam out a series of challenges set in locations around the city. Smartphones lead players towards the correct way as teams pick their challenges, and competitors must use their devices to capture photographic evidence that they completed the usually embarrassing tasks. Potential missions include knitting a useful item out of plastic grocery bags to reenacting the classic fountain-splashing scene from the title sequence of Friends. For each task completed, the organizers award teams a certain number of points, and the team that earns the most points overall wins a $250 Visa gift card and the designation of microcelebrity.

Competitors should make sure to bring their mobile devices and clad themselves in orange—the competition’s signature color—to gain some bonus points.

Urban Goose Chase

The day of the citywide scavenger hunt, 200–300 teams of up to five people hit the streets, clad in Urban Goose Chase’s signature orange. The event organizers communicate hints and challenges via smartphone. Tasks vary widely, sometimes requiring creativity, sometimes a willingness to get messy, and sometimes the courage to eat whatever the race’s chefs cook up. In the end, one team reigns supreme, taking home a prize and making lots of smug faces. The hunt kicks off in cities all over North America, from New York to San Francisco and Chicago to Saskatoon.

The Groupon Guide to: Mystery Baskets

Anyone with a doorstep has most likely already been a recipient of mysteriously abandoned baskets, with or without notes explaining the contents and, if necessary, how to care for those contents. Brace yourself before peeking under that blanket—your new, free basket most likely contains one of the following:

  • Abandoned infant girl born out of wedlock to a wealthy count
  • Eight kittens or one regular-size cat
  • A smaller basket containing yet-smaller baskets, culminating in a meticulously hand-woven wicker thimble
  • More free hours of AOL than you can realistically use before death
  • An assortment of meats and cheeses from Grandmama! And what’s this … almond bark?!
  • A spring-loaded pie to the face and a note: "Don’t mess with the Eighth Street Cobras!"

More than 50% of Americans receive mystery baskets on their doorstep every day.
