Hairstylists tend to be great conversationalists, but it’s not often that their gift of gab elicits a job offer from a US senator. Salon owner and stylist Ury Emsellem’s knowledge impressed the client so much, the senator brought former Israeli soldier Ury on as a consultant during Israel-PLO peace-treaty negotiations. The vote of confidence isn’t surprising—Ury came to the United States to study international law but instead followed his dreams of becoming a hairstylist. Eventually he became the trusted coiffeur of Washington Post icon Katharine Graham, and over the decades he has seen his praises published in Vogue, InStyle, and Harper’s Bazaar.

Though his salon hosts its fair share of history-makers, Ury and his team keep pace with modern styling trends. They administer both Japanese and Brazilian straightening treatments and perform creative coloring techniques such as balayage. The Washingtonian also highlighted their color services, saying, “loyal clients, particularly blondes, rave about the natural looking color.” According to the magazine, the salon’s loyal clients include writers Sally Quinn and Jan Pottker, the latter of whom used the publication to swear her allegiance to Semra, the salon’s famed waxing specialist.
