Art helps people reach a wide audience without shouting from the top of radio towers, provocatively dancing behind a local TV field reporter, or tying speech bubbles to migrating birds. Express yourself with this Groupon.

Choose from Three Options

  • $69 for a Melding with Welding beginners' welding class (a $300 value)
  • $69 for a Pinching Giacometti steel-sculpting class (a $300 value)
  • $69 for a Torching a Motherwall aluminum-sculpting class (a $300 value)

Each five-hour metal-manipulating class, which includes all necessary materials, begins with a lecture on the history, innovations, and artistic techniques of the chosen medium. Afterwards, six to eight students follow along as the instructor demonstrates how to weld a flint-and-bone sculpture to a stainless-steel stand using tungsten inert gas (Melding with Welding), bend steel into the form of an abstract humanoid in the style of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti (Pinching Giacometti), or paint a piece of aluminum using a gas torch (Torching a Motherwall). An included glass of wine stimulates creative impulses, and after an end-of-class critique, students return home with their creations in tow. All three classes are held at the same time on Monday, Thursday, and every other Sunday.

Vesper College

The encouraging instructors and professors at Vesper College, a graduate school of fine arts and architecture, sharpen students’ understanding of design and bolster their respect for ecological balance. With a two-year curriculum, their MFA program in Ecological Architecture guides participants to mastering such disciplines as interior design, landscape design, construction management, and public-installation art. The school also hosts classes for the community, getting toes wet in various forms of art including brass sculpture and reshaping crowbars into clef notes.

The Groupon Guide to: Harebrained Schemes

These days it seems like everyone has some kind of harebrained get-rich-quick scheme. Use this handy guide to sort out whether a scheme is destined for failure or straight for the bank:

Scheme: Your neighbor Robert wants you to open a flower shop with him.
Verdict: Harebrained. Robert inherited the flower shop from his father, but in order to keep the shop’s best customer, Mrs. Winifred Downing, you’ll have to pretend that Robert’s father is still alive and court Mrs. Downing in his guise.

Scheme: Your boyfriend, Calvin, wants to get married.
Verdict: Harebrained. Calvin will use the marriage as a contract to bind you together both financially and spiritually. Once you’ve signed the paperwork, Calvin can move into your house and even use your toilet.

Scheme: Your older cousin, Harrison, wants to build an airplane in the front yard and charge local children to take rides in it.
Verdict: Legitimate. This is a business opportunity you won’t want to pass up, just to see every other family in the neighborhood raking in money with their front-yard aeronautics companies. Sign over all of your bank accounts and government bonds to Harrison as soon as possible.

Look at those children having fun in that raft on the roof!
