This place is fantastic, and gratefully, they enacted significant strategies to allow artists to come in, with everyone following safe methods. I have been there multiple times for a number of classes during the years. The teachers are kind, helpful, and compassionate, being able to support people on all experience levels.

Creating a masterwork of art can be like wandering through a maze: after a lengthy period of self-reflection and contemplation, you’ll still probably starve. Appreciate the figurative risks and transcendent joys of artistic creativity with today’s Groupon: for $39, you get $95 worth of art classes at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. The value of this Groupon may be applied towards a class whose value is less than or equal to $95 or a class whose value is greater than $95. Material fees are not included.

The Visual Arts Center offers more than 500 hands-on art-making classes to adults and children of all skill levels and philosophical leanings. Photography, glass art, jewelry making, writing, drawing, and clay spinning, to name a few, are all offered in classes of various lengths. Some classes are weeks long, while others last just a day. Budding authors can kindle the flame of creativity with the six-hour Writing as Provocative Magic course ($90), while playwrights can master matinee mechanics with The Nuts and Bolts of Playwriting ($90). For stamp collectors with a strong belief in self-reliance, the Visual Arts Center offers an experimental stamp making-class ($95), and The Well Traveled Photographer course for beginners ensures that you'll never again be embarrassed in public by failing to recognize Big Ben in a crowd ($95). If an in-depth course suits your fancy, you may redeem your Groupon toward the value of a longer course, such as the five- to-six-week glass bead-making course ($205+), or a weeklong landscape drawing course at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden ($155).

The friendly staff at the Visual Arts Center includes a 75-person strong army of adjunct instructors, ready to lead brush-laden brigades of budding artists through the treacherous terrain of the imagination. Keep your hands out of the rabid jaws of your pockets by distracting them with an art class. Call ahead to schedule your class.

About Visual Arts Center of Richmond

It's been more than half a century since the Visual Arts Center of Richmond was founded to engage the community through art, proving Virginia's creative community is as fruitful as it is inventive. In rotating exhibits that spotlight local and nationally recognized artists, the museum makes contemporary art accessible, relatable, and rarely covered in bees. But it's not all about established artists. VisArts makes classes for the community a priority as well, and programs include an introduction to blacksmithing for adults, fabric design, letterpress printing, and weekly art classes for both adults and kids that focus on cartooning, clay, photography, and simple jewelry.
