VO2 max tests measure the body's consumption of oxygen during exercise. This information helps design cardio workouts that burn the most fat for more productive workouts. During the test, clients jog on the treadmill or pedal on a bicycle while breathing into a mouthpiece. Computers measure the amount of CO2 coming out of the body, as well as heart rate.

The resting metobolic test measures how fast the body burns calories. During the test, clients breathe naturally for 10 minutes into a mouthpiece, which measures the oxygen in the air against the oxygen coming out of the lungs.
