  • $135 for an Oregon wine tour for two (a $300 value)

During Wine Up! Wine Merchant’s tours, a knowledgeable guide leads groups of up to 12 on a trip to three to six wineries. The day commences with a walking tour of a vineyard, and then guests hop into a bus or van and travel throughout the Willamette Valley to vino hot spots. The guides focus on educating their visitors about the Oregon-produced varietals and the winemaking process as well as spouting off facts about root stocks, grafting techniques, and clone selection. Guests can choose between two tours: the Introductory Wine tour and the Red Wine Lovers tour. The Introductory Wine tour covers a full spectrum of wines, from sparkling to pinot noir to dessert wines, traveling to wineries including WillaKenzie Estate, Argyle Estate, and Lemelson Vineyards. During the Red Wine Lovers tour, the guide points out the Willamette Valley’s major pinot noir producers, including Anam Cara Cellars, Domaine Serene—which lies in the Dundee Hills, where Oregon pinot noir was born—and Bergstrom Wines. As guests sip and learn facts, they can nibble on complimentary fruit and cheese. Tours typically last from 10:20 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Groupon Guide to: Grandfather Clocks

Contrary to popular belief, grandfather clocks aren’t clocks that had to move into the downstairs bedroom of your house because they have a bad hip and can’t get around so well these days. They’re actually beautiful and masterfully crafted timekeepers. Get the scoop on big clocks with this guide:

  • Grandfather clocks have a tall base so that they can be seen over the heads of houseguests lingering late into the night and household residents who aren’t supposed to be out of bed at that hour.

  • The ticking sound a grandfather clock emits each second reminds its owner of how swiftly time passes, time that could have been spent getting a sound night’s sleep.

  • The only person to ever successfully open a grandfather clock didn’t find any gears inside, just a list of men who were too busy wasting their time to be successful.

  • The White House has a famous grandfather clock called The Honorability. Little-known, single-term president Franklin Pierce once said of it, “I know that clocks can’t actually form opinions or frown disapprovingly, but that overgrown wristwatch is judging me and I’m going to kill it.”

Which US president killed a grandfather clock?
