In a Nutshell

Donations provide six therapeutic sessions for two children who have a parent facing a serious illness

The Fine Print

The Issue: Children Facing a Parent’s Serious Illness

About 24% of adults with cancer are parenting children younger than 18, according to data from the journal Cancer Nursing. Having a family member dealing with disease can increase psychological stress and lead to conflicts among family members. Additionally, parents often struggle to talk to their children about their illness and perceive a lack of support from medical professionals.

The Campaign: Funding Therapeutic Sessions for Youth

If 78 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Wonders & Worries can provide six therapeutic sessions for two children who have a parent with a serious illness. Donations will be matched up to $8,000 by The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. Each additional $390 raised will provide another child with six therapeutic sessions.

Learning that a parent is seriously ill can create feelings of confusion, anger, and trauma in children, who are often unaware of healthful coping strategies. Wonders & Worries provides weekly one-on-one sessions or group support for youth, led by a professional trained in child life. Through these sessions, children can learn to express their feelings and positively cope with illness in the family.

All donations will be matched up to a $8,000 total by The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

Wonders & Worries

While working in a hospital setting, Meredith Cooper and Melissa Hicks saw a number of children who suffered emotional devastation due to a family member’s illness. Together they founded Wonders & Worries to provide formalized therapeutic sessions for youth with a seriously ill parent. They and their staff of child-life professionals have worked with more than 1,000 families with a member dealing with cancer, ALS, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Their therapeutic sessions help children maintain a sense of normalcy while they cope with hospital visits and the effects of their parent's illness. The organization provides both individual and group sessions in English and Spanish and offers bereavement support for families that experience a loss.
