- Alternative to cooking with firewood alone
- Reduces risk of attack on women collecting wood
- Alleviates environmental impact of foraging for wood
Drought conditions in Darfur require the refugees and women who collect firewood to venture deeper into the barren landscape in order to procure the wood they need to fuel cooking fires. The process of chopping down trees and uprooting grasses can harm the ecosystem, and collecting firewood from remote, unsafe areas makes women especially vulnerable to attack. However, many families must skip meals when they cannot collect enough wood. World Food Program USA (WFP USA) aims to relieve hunger by engaging individuals and organizations and generating resources for the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and other hunger relief operations.
WFP's SAFE stove project provides households in Darfur with an alternative to traditional methods of cooking in the form of efficient cooking stoves composed of locally sourced mud and clay that reduce the amount of firewood required to cook meals. Sun-dried briquettes made of municipal and animal waste fuel the SAFE stoves, cutting their need for firewood in half. WFP USA will also train recipients on how to use and maintain their stoves, as well as construct new stoves from local materials.
Join G-Team and donate $3 or $17 to help provide households in Darfur with efficient cooking stoves, with matching donations from an anonymous donor up to $100,000. If G-Team members raise $600, WFP can provide 200 stoves to families in Darfur. If G-Team donations total at least $3,400, then WFP USA will also be able to fund training for stove recipients, in addition to furnishing 200 stoves. G-Team members can also send a message of support to a woman in Darfur. Have a question or comment? Join the discussion.
