The Fine Print

The demands of parenthood can be overwhelming for those who are not emotionally or financially prepared for them. Teens often face a number of challenges when they become parents at a young age. YouthLaunch provides youth-development programs that include peer mentorship, service opportunities, and activities to facilitate a sense of social responsibility. One of its areas of focus is encouraging youth through peer education to delay parenthood.

Through its YouthLaunch No Kidding: Straight Talk from Teen Parents program, YouthLaunch sponsors teen parents to lead a presentation about the realities of young parenting for Austin-area middle and high schools. Interactive presentations span three days and cover many of the challenges young parents face, such as the financial costs and personal responsibilities of raising a child and paying child support, with the goal of encouraging young people to delay parenthood until they are emotionally and financially prepared for it. During the 2010-2011 school year, the No Kidding program reached more than 6,280 middle- and high-school students.

Join G-Team and donate $10 to help YouthLaunch present the No Kidding: Straight Talk From Teen Parents program. If G-Team members raise $400, YouthLaunch can fund peer educators to present the program in two Austin-area high-school classrooms.
