Earthbound spirits still care about the planet, which is why haunted houses feature lights that suddenly go out and showers that shut off after three minutes. Feel the phantom power with today's Groupon: for $15, you get two admissions to the House of Bathory haunted house, presented by Dead by Dawn Productions in Manitowoc (a $30 value). The haunted house is open from 7 p.m. to midnight on evenings that the Groupon is valid. Choose from the following dates to redeem your Groupon:
- Friday and Saturday, October 7–8 and October 14–15
- Friday and Saturday, October 21–22
- Friday and Saturday, October 28–29
Back for its 22nd year, the House of Bathory explores the history of the world through a distorted lens that focuses in on the particularly shocking. The interactive theatrical haunt sates desires for chills and thrills with elaborate themes and costumed actors who commit to their role wholeheartedly. Skilled shriekers can also venture to the house each Friday at 9 p.m. for the scream contest, where one male and one female winner from each competition will pit their vocal cords against each other on the final Friday, October 28, at 9 p.m., to see whose scream is capable of turning a magnifying glass into a bubble wand.
The House of Bathory is named for Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory (1560–1614), who garnered numerous comparisons to Vlad the Impaler and the nickname "Blood Countess" because of her reputation as a prolific serial killer and mosquito swatter.
Though this Groupon is valid for all ages, this show is of a graphic nature. The House of Bathory is not wheelchair accessible; please notify Dead by Dawn productions if you have any special needs.

The Groupon Guide to: Common Misconceptions
Many agreed upon "facts" actually have little to no basis in reality but enter societal consensus through word-of-mouth folk wisdom or under-the-table bribes to sleazy scientists. What are some common misconceptions you may not even know you're misconcepting?
Bumblebees are scientifically incapable of flight.
Origin: Unknown
Fact or Falsehood: Close, but not quite accurate. Bumblebees are quite capable of flight, as anyone who has jumped into a swimming pool to outrace a swarm of them in the shape of a giant fist may attest. What bumblebees are actually incapable of is forgiveness.
Glass is technically a liquid.
Origin: Common misspeaking
Fact or Falsehood: Falsehood. What people mean to say is that a liquid can technically be consumed from a glass. The myth is perpetuated by the increased thickness near the base of centuries-old glass panes, which is actually just a manufacturer's feature to keep spiders out.
A penny dropped from the roof of the Empire State Building will crack the sidewalk.
Origin: Childhood dare culture
Fact or Falsehood: Understatement. Upon impact, a penny dropped from the top of the Empire State Building will destroy the entire earth. This has happened twice, once in 1972, and then again in 1972, with the calendar having been restarted upon the construction of a new earth and, subsequently, a new Empire State Building.
