Hemingway’s Lost Novel

Scholars have recently excavated a copy of Ernest Hemingway’s lost novel Poblano, about a man on a perilous trip through Mexico to collect valuable poblano chilies. Take a look at this teaser material from the first chapter:

William Stoutkick squinted in the Mexican sun. Across the river there was Fantastic Violence. Men were fighting about manly things, there were guns probably.

“I think we should camp here for the day,” he said to Jorge, a guide he had hired from town. “Hand me my whiskey.”

William loved his whiskey the way a man loved a woman or a fine whiskey. A bead of sweat ran down the side of the cool glass like a football player carrying a ball made of steak through a warzone. He sipped it. Its masculine taste made him think of dead cheetahs and not talking about feelings.

“Tomorrow, I think we will find the chilies,” he remarked male-ly.

“Si, Señor,” said Jorge while shooting a sword with a gun, “Si.”
