In the late 19th century, oceanographers discovered that waves are caused by distant winds and not, as it was previously believed, by the temper tantrums of adolescent sea monsters. Ride a krakenous conniption with today’s Groupon: for $50, you get a Watermen’s Adventure Package from Real Watersports in Waves on Cape Hatteras (a $100 value).

Helmed by kiteboarding pioneers Trip Forman and Matt Nuzzo and lauded by Men’s Journal as one of the best sports camps in America, Real Watersports' guides train and outfit extreme water recreationists of all skill levels. Wrangle waves during two-hour lessons in surfing, standup paddleboarding, or kiteboarding, a chimerical extreme water sport that combines a small board with a large, controllable kite to propel riders over the waves and into the air. No matter which method of propulsion you use, Real’s expert guides will teach you how to ride, chop through, or fly over the waves in private terrain set aside for Real by an exclusive permit from the National Parks Service, freeing athletes from the glare of beachcombers or the cat calls of foul-mouthed pelicans.

The Watermen’s Adventure is available at 10 a.m. on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and no previous experience is required. All equipment is provided, so there’s no need to invest in an expensive board or stay up all night sewing kites out of old T-shirts. The availability of each sport is subject to weather conditions.

The Groupon Guide to: Horse Racing

Horse racing, known as the Sport of Kings since the federal ban on King Fighting, is actually much more complex than a simple contest of equine speed. Here are some of the more obscure rules of horseracing:

  • Although zebras are technically horses, they are banned from competing due to the hypnotic effect triggered by their oscillating stripes, which leads to foaming seizures in the adjacent traditional horses.
  • Horses born of the same litter must never compete, so as not to pit brother against brother.
  • It is OK for the jockey to whip his or her horse, as long as a stadium full of people is enjoying cheering for them to do so.
  • Tallest horse always wins. Always.
  • If the race is too close to call, judges employ a photo finish—a tiebreaker lightning round in which the first horse to eat an entire barrel of old Polaroids wins.
