Room Conditions & Amenities not worth price paid, though convenient location for George R Brown Convention Center During my recent attendance at the Gas Tech Conference and Exposition, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Downtown Houston Convention Center. The experience was adequate at best. Arrival and Check-In Arrival and check-in were convenient and timely for me, although the manager was not available all week, and issues with a colleague’s reservation could not be corrected, resulting in additional charges that should have been avoidable. The main lobby has been renovated and looks nice, with sufficient air conditioning for the Houston environment. However, the hallways for the rooms on floors 2-4 and the elevators were really humid, stuffy, and quite hot, with sustained temperatures in the 80s-90s Fahrenheit. The Room The room was sufficient, though much was desired. The bed was comfortable, and the furnishings were adequate and recently updated, though modest. The air conditioning was sufficient to keep the room at a reasonable temperature, but the humidity never seemed to be reduced, making it seem overly stuffy and adding to the mostly unpleasant atmosphere. Despite what appeared to be a renovation or refreshing, the room showed its age, and there were many details that did not have proper attention paid during the renovation. For example, paint on the bathroom door kept it from being able to close, the lock mechanism on the door to the room did not work and honestly wouldn’t prevent anyone who really wanted to force their way into the room from entering, and grout for the new tile was spotty with holes and gaps visible. Paint on the walls was rushed with many visible brush strokes, fixtures being painted as well, which looked amateurish and unprofessional. There were unfinished items in the main part of the room, with outlet covers missing and dirty/stained curtains and lampshades making the environment less inviting. The shower pressure was not constant and disruptions during showers were common as the water pressure decreased to nothing and then started up again. The sinks also experienced some air pockets and pressure issues, making getting water difficult at times. I also observed and took care of many tiny red ants that constantly appeared to be looking for food, and I was on the fourth floor! Amenities and Facilities The fitness center falls into the category of: “At Least There is a Gym” as there were two treadmills, an elliptical machine, and a recumbent bike. There were a few free weights with 10s, 15s, 20s, 25s, and 30s available. There is no bench, but there were pads, an Ab Ball, and a half Bosu Ball that could be used, so I was able to modify most of my workouts with what was available. The room gets warm without air movement, especially if there are people using the treadmills, which generate heat. Breakfast was quite good for being a continental-style buffet, with prompt service, refills, and very clean conditions. The internet was adequate for business work and proved reliable. While this hotel was close to the George R. Brown Convention Center, that was its most defining characteristic. Overall Experience My stay at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Downtown Houston Convention Center during the Gas Tech Conference and Exposition was a mixed experience. While the proximity to the George R. Brown Convention Center was convenient, the overall quality of the hotel left much to be desired. The combination of inadequate air conditioning in certain areas, subpar room conditions, and unresolved reservation issues overshadowed the positive aspects of the service and amenities. I would not recommend the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Downtown Houston Convention Center for future stays, as it does not meet the expected standards for the price paid.

Room needs update, smell intolerable. Very close to Toyota center, bed comfortable, staff friendly, I would stay again if it weren't for the room smelling like it had been heavily urinated in. Couldn't handle the smell checked out early. Looks like they are remodeling so hopefully with new carpet the smell will go away.

NON-EXISTENT CUSTOMER SERVICE I made a reservation for 7 nights through the hotel for a convention. The reservation was modifiable. As the date for my trip got closer, I called the hotel to change the reservation - I wanted to reduce my stay by one night. After 30 minutes on the telephone, I was told that I could not reduce my stay by one night, and they could not explain why. Then I received an e-mail from the hotel telling me there was a minimum stay. I asked what the minimum stay is and why wasn't I advised of the minimum stay at check-in and NEVER GOT A RESPONSE. I followed up with a phone call and was told only the general manager could answer this question. I asked to speak to him, was told he was unavailable, and NEVER GOT A RESPONSE. A week later, I followed up with an e-mail asking what the minimum stay is and why wasn't I advised of this at check-in. Two days later, I STILL DO NOT HAVE A RESPONSE. I find it impossible to believe that there is a minimum stay of 7 nights. But I am not being permitted to simply change my reservation from 7 nights to 6 nights.

Scary As i checked in, there was a lady wandering around reception babbling and talking to herself, no shoes, dirty feet. I went out for an hour, when i got back, she was asleep on the pathway outside, told reception. When i got back from a meeting, i was settling down in my room, when my door started rattling, someone was trying to break in, i charged out, hoping to take them by surprise, it was that woman again, she had made her way to the fourth floor. I called reception, who then called the police, she went berserk, taking on two of the biggest policemen i have ever seen, they subdued her, very carefully and took her away. The point i am making is that it appears anyone can wander around this hotel unchallenged, there is no security, i felt unsafe, couldn't sleep, even though i moved rooms. I would never stay here, or any Holiday Inn Express again.

Major renovation needed, but that’s not the worst part! I’ve stayed at this hotel twice this year, & both times were incredibly disappointing! Most of the front desk staff seemed bothered by the guests’ presence, the the hotel is in major need of an overhaul; there are tons of obvious issues that need to be fixed. The first time we stayed, the bathroom was awful. There were holes in the shower wall above the knob, the spigot had been caulked (VERY POORLY) multiple times, & the shower head didn’t even work well. Also, the WiFI was completely non-functional (none in my party could get it to work). I asked at the front desk, & they just shrugged & said it should work. I wasn’t impressed at all, but I decided to stay there again because of the location. Well, that was a mistake! The second time, I had a room overlooking a parking lot, & there is a nightclub that has BOOMING bass until 1:30 in the morning. I could not sleep at all. Also, there was obvious mildew by the ceiling in the bathroom. The lone bright spot was one front desk worker named Ines. I asked about the graffiti building (a tourist attraction in close proximity to the hotel). Ines showed my the location on the map, but also walked me out the back door & pointed me toward it, explaining how to walk there. She was so friendly and went above & beyond to make sure I didn’t get lost. Despite the great location (steps from the convention center & Toyota Center, also not far from Minute Maid Park), I would not stay here again!
