At The Book Man’s two locations, half a million used books beckon to readers, impeccably organized into 72 categories on deep shelves and in spacious drawers. Family owned and operated by a daughter and father team, Amber and book man David illuminate wordy wares with full-spectrum lighting, which helps browsers find a specific book or take a peek at the first sentences of an unfamiliar tome. Although they stock plenty of well-known classics and bestsellers, one of David's favourite aspects of owning a bookstore is stocking unusual treasures. “That’s the whole fun of the bookstore,” he says, “finding those things that people didn’t know they were looking for until they see it.” Amber boasts 20-plus years of experience, oversees inventory databasing, and drives the internet and mail order aspect of their business, allowing customers to contact The Book Man and order books to be placed on hold.

Praised as a local gem by Fraser Valley Pulse, the shop has won awards for Best Bookstore in Chilliwack with its comfortable environment. The store’s unique, reader-friendly spirit has two mascots in store cats Nietzsche and Gatsby, who stalk the shelves of both stores and greet favoured guests with mewling demands to be petted. Customers are free to bring their dogs with them, or plop kiddies down in a play area lined with thousands of picture books and early readers.

A serious accident took TNT Fitness?s founder Tag Dundas?s physical and mental health, right down to his ability to walk. During his journey to recovery, he transformed his life. It took hours of work and training, but Tag regained all his functionality, and the experience had him sticking with the gym until well after his time in physical therapy had come to an end. His new fitness far surpassed what it had been before the accident, and he decided to become a personal trainer to help others achieve those goals they always thought were impossible.

Today, Tag and his team of trainers help clients strengthen and condition their bodies in group fitness classes and personal training. Michelle, Candice, and Sherri, who conducts cardio and core exercises, and Colleen, who conducts beginner classes, help equip athletes to excel with tailored training that focuses on building the kinds of speed, strength, and agility needed for each sport. Tag himself has logged nearly 1,000 hours using TRX resistance bands in personal-training sessions and boot camps. He affectionately calls the camps T-ReX boot camps, after the dinosaur renowned for its strength, ferocity, and ability to perform a perfect unassisted sit-up.

When a motorcycle accident blew out his knee, avid swing dancer Jason Warner drew emotional and physical strength from the growing dance community he and his wife, Crystal, had created at Suburban Swing. Warner had danced for three years prior to the injury in 2000, the same year he began hosting lessons, swing dance parties, and fetes-for-hire at pubs and performance halls around town. The Langley Advance reported that a significant part of his 18-month recovery was dance, which his doctor had green lighted as a safe way to ease back into movement. More than a decade later, Warner is the bedrock of a community devoted to East Coast swing, lindy hop, balboa, and blues dancing as an instructor, a DJ, and the founder of Swing Summit, an annual training camp.

The couple keeps their footwork fancy with regular workshops, and both have contributed to television shows such as Smallville and CTV's Robson Arms. Demonstrating their care for the world beyond brass bands and pompadour wrangling, the two increased their class and party fees by a quarter so they could donate all of the additional revenue to sponsor children in need via World Vision Canada.
