Paige and Blaze are two of the luckiest dogs out there. Instead of whipping up batches of cupcakes or cronuts, their owners, sisters Anne and Mary, have dedicated their gourmet baking experience to crafting fresh, wholesome, and inventive dog treats. And their lucky pooches have the glamorous job of taste-testing new batches. Anne and Mary whip up fresh and tasty treats for pups daily, baking batches of chicken pot pies, 7-cheese pizzas, and peanut butter pops. They also bake up sweets covered in peanut butter or carob such as cat-shaped cookies. To help pooches celebrate milestones, the duo also designs birthday cakes shaped like bones or famous mailmen.
At Fruitzzy, customers create their own icy treats using as many flavors of frozen yogurt and toppings as they can fit into a cup. The shop rotates its approximately 80 yogurt flavors on a daily basis and stocks more than 40 edible adornments, including fruits, candies, and nuts. To appease as a wide a customer base as possible, the treat haven offers only certified gluten-free flavors and a range of nonfat options. In addition to free WiFi, Fruitzzy offers complimentary valet parking on Fridays and Saturdays, bypassing the need to find a spot or replace the ejector seat before going in.
Carol Russell comes from a long line of winemakers—her father, Herbert, and grandfather, Max, crafted sparkling wine at their vineyard in New York. After dreaming of rebooting the family tradition for quite some time, she moved to farmland in Westport, Massachusetts, in 1982 and her family planted their first vines four years later. Today, the winery family cultivates 80 acres of grapes including chardonnay, pinot gris, pinot noir, and riesling.
Made through a combination of old-timey and contemporary techniques, the sparkling wines, table wines, and aperitifs have earned more than 20 gold medals and twice-filled glasses at the White House. Wine flows year-round at the Westport Rivers’ store, which hosts tastings, an art gallery, and autumnal hayride vineyard tours where guests meet the giants who squash the grapes with a single stomp once a year.
Soft-serve frozen yogurt or gelato in rich flavors gently swirls into a cheery pink or blue cup. Toppings doled out by the spoonful tumble from the top. And finally, with much rejoicing, the diner swoops a plastic spoon in for the first of many bites. Dream Sweet Froyo's colorful interior draws the eye as much as its indulgent (and low-fat) treats inspire drooling, and guests enjoy their yogurt or gelato while watching the 60-inch television, surfing the free WiFi, or calculating exactly how many drops of hot fudge fit into a ladle. Frozen yogurt and gelato are also available to take home by the pint ($0.30/ounce).
Owner Howie Mallowes set up shop across from the Martha's Vineyard ferry terminal, where his restaurant specializes in infusing New York–style pies with gourmet ingredients such as shrimp, gorgonzola, and steak. Amongst the fresh harbor air, staffers shuttle whole pizzas and single slices to tables of visitors and regulars until the wee hours of 2 a.m. every night. The menu plays host to more than a dozen specialty pizzas such as the Pizans "Soon to be Famous" Clam Pizza, which just signed a three-picture deal with DreamWorks. Pizzas share stomach space with pastas, oven-baked grinders, footlong subs, beer, and wine.
TRIO Cafe & Lounge is the brainchild of brothers Tony and Paul Rodrigues and their childhood friend, Brian Carvalho. The trio sought to replicate a European-style eatery and lounge in Massachusetts, complete with chic decor, contemporary cuisine, and innovative cocktails. Abstract art speckles the walls of each location's sleek space, where diners sit on cushy couches and clink glasses of sangria over raw oysters and peppercorn-encrusted steaks.
