Sandy Creps first became acquainted with yoga in her living room—this was in the '90s, when watching videotapes and using chickens as commerce were regularly practiced. Wanting more of a challenge than what she was getting from the video, she began attending classes, and because of the way yoga cleared her mind and balanced her body, she got hooked. Today, Sandy is a registered yoga instructor and teaches gentle yoga, slow flow, and flow classes. She enjoys teaching students of all fitness levels how yoga can increase flexibility, help with weight loss, and increase energy, as well as sharing the knowledge she's gained through exploring local yoga scenes around the country and in Puerto Rico.
Instructors at Wow Fitness, many of whom boast certification from the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, cheer on clients during a diverse range of classes, including all-levels yoga, Zumba, and circuit training designed to maximize fat burning. Those with children can deposit them at onsite childcare for an additional fee or lie down on the floor and bench-press them to build muscle.
Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing with the Stars multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn up to 500 calories with each go-round.
At Harmony in Life, which the Toledo City Paper named Toledo's Best Yoga Studio in 2010, certified yoga instructor Tammy Warren guides bodies through gentle yoga, a calming Vinyasa flow class. Within a tranquil studio bedecked in twinkling light strands, Tammy emphasizes breath control and body alignment to combat stress and ensure symmetrical snow angels. Tammy also varies each joint-soothing posture to accommodate diverse levels of pliability. Gentle yoga classes aim to improve posture, enhance strength, and increase concentration for a productive day of teaching parakeets to swear. Peruse the full yoga schedule here.
