The Play Destination is a celebration of childhood, and not just because of its bounce houses. Owners Nicole Hirsty Saine and Keri Stein designed their play center to encourage kids to engage in unstructured play. Games, toys, and activities—all chosen to build physical and mental skills—allow youngsters to make their own decisions and think creatively as they dream up fantastic new worlds and imaginary friends with even fuzzier tentacles. But adults aren't forgotten about—complimentary coffee, WiFi, magazines, and ample seating keep parents occupied.
Structured events do occasionally take place amidst the free play. The Play Destination hosts birthday parties and activities such as art and story time. With kids busy, parents can participate in adult classes, such as yoga or sessions that educate first-time mothers.
California's hills paint a jagged horizon in the distance. Catalina Island sits regally in the sparkling water. Famed Malibu beaches teem with surfers. Workout enthusiasts can also opt for a 5-mile, three-hour trip to aptly named Paradise Cove, and beginners can learn the basics of paddleboarding at a lesson.
Professional tennis player Sam Querrey has been ranked in the ATP’s top 20 players in the world—but that may never have happened if it wasn’t for Tim Schnaible. Schnaible served as Querrey’s personal coach in the tennis star’s formative years of 10–16, helping mold his big serve and net-charging game into one of the world’s most formidable talents. Today, as the owner and director of tennis at Match Tough Tennis Academy, Schnaible continues to train players with the help of a staff of former high school, college, and USTA standouts. The Academy offers group lessons for adults and juniors of all abilities, as well as pro-shop services including racket stringing with a 24-hour turnaround.
When it comes to musical instruction, Musician's Depot's field of talent is deep. Practiced instructors, many of whom work as studio musicians and perform in their own bands, teach almost every instrument imaginable, from guitar and drums to flute, violin, and french horn. Kids and adults alike can stop in for a lesson, peruse the stock of instruments for sale, or rent an instrument month-to-month before they commit to full ownership.
Rock and Roll High turns children into rockstars through lessons and summer camps that mold eager novices into capable maestros. Popular week-long summer camps help kids assemble bands, practice their instrument and write songs, and even shoot a music video. At-home lessons for children or adults cover a choice of instruments, including guitar, bass, drums, and voice.
At Paddle Surf Malibu, students can go from learning basic standup paddleboarding techniques to advanced maneuvers. During lessons, teachers capture all the action with a GoPro camera, giving students full footage afterward. That way, paddleboarders can relive their lesson at home or share it on social media.
