Director Marianne Van Etten and her troupe of instructors help to inject steps with traditional American and international rhythms during interrelated lessons. The curriculum helps students of all experience levels to confidently navigate the dance floor without surgically removing a second left foot. Three-hour weekend workshops immerse students in the instruction of swing, Latin, and smooth techniques in one dose, and group classes gather guests for 55 minute sessions in styles including yoga and children's ballroom. Classes unfold inside the air-conditioned studio, which accommodates up to 75 dancers atop its spring-loaded wood floor. Further inspiring lofty steps, a stereo sound system floods the space, which overlooks views of mountainous terrain symbolizing the uphill battle faced when tangoing with both hands tied behind your back.
Arthur Murray Dance Studio has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and the Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, the Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partnerless will be paired up with an instructor as the teachers assess their current skill level and make recommendations on the most appropriate program. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.

A honky tonk oasis for those who prefer cowboy boots and ten-gallon hats, Borderline Bar and Grill is as close as the West Coast gets to Texas. Most evenings feature live bands playing country music hits, as well as early lessons to prepare fledgling two-steppers and line-dancers for the bar’s sprawling hardwood dance floor. For the country-averse, the club features Monday night West Coast swing-dance lessons, and Tuesday nights are typically dedicated to salsa dancing. Visitors can fuel up their feet with southern-style appetizers, entrees, and libations found on the fully loaded menu.

Since Pepperdine moved to Malibu from Los Angeles in 1972, the school's athletics program has accrued accolades in a variety of team and individual activities, becoming one of only 16 NCAA Division I schools to win men's national titles in five different sports. In addition to the Waves' national championships in baseball, women's sand volleyball, and men's tennis, the men's volleyball team claimed five titles between '78 and '05, prompting opponents to bring metal detectors to matches in hopes that new trophies were buried under the floorboards. Among the more than 100 individuals and teams lining the Waves' hall of fame, several Pepperdine alum have gone on to careers in everything from the pro tennis circuit to Major League Baseball.
