The moment Teresa Hill looked into Sierra's enormous brown eyes, she knew she had to save her from the butcher's knife. Although the mare was injured and prone to nervous behaviour, Hill took Sierra home with her rather than to allow the stable to sell her to a slaughterhouse. At first, their friendship was rocky—Sierra wouldn't eat any of the store-bought treats Hill tried to feed her. It wasn't until she whipped up her own concoction of molasses and grain that the horse began to eat. After the other horses at the stable and their owners began taking notice, she began peddling her wares to local tack shops.
Hill soon expanded her recipe book to encompass jerkies and other meaty snacks for her dogs, helping earn her operation the 2011 Business Award of Excellence. The gourmet pet chef folds local ingredients—such as AAA Canadian beef and Algoma Orchard apple flakes—into a nutritious treats in a variety of animal-friendly flavours, from bran mash for horses to dog biscuits that taste like the mailman's left pant-leg.
