People who have played golf now that it's a notoriously challenging game, but for many living with disabilities, even getting to the first tee is a challenge and accomplishment. Edwin Shaw Challenge Golf Course was built in 1999 as part of the Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute to provide golf programs for people with disabilities, so it's designed with ease-of-access in mind. Features such as wheelchair-accessible paths and handrails on the tees make it accessible for everyone, including those recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and amputations. While there are only three holes, each has three sets of tees so a full nine-hole round can be played. The facility is designed both disabled and able-bodied golfers of all ages with a 12-acre driving range, a practice green, and indoor hitting range.
Helmed by Julie Buckeye, a globe trekker who has learned dozens of dances during her travels, the team of instructors at World of Dances teaches children and adults of all skill levels to shimmy with international flair and self-confidence. Julie approaches each of her classes with an enthusiasm for disparate cultures and a desire to help students feel great about their own lives, whether they're stretching toward the sun during yoga classes, undulating their hips during belly-dancing classes, or high-fiving themselves during hip-hop classes. Bouncing sun rays enter the World of Dances studio through floor-to-ceiling windows and join students in boogie routines, while the sprawling parking lot outside encourages cars to relax as they work on their suntans.
Sculpted into the Ohio countryside in 1928, Maplecrest Golf Club’s course spans 6,312 yards of immaculate fairways that arch over gentle hilltops for a par 71 round. The club’s intrepid greenskeepers work hard to keep the course in pristine condition, including maintaining an onsite greenhouse where they grow all the course’s plants, trees, flowers, and sand-trap rakes before incorporating them into the layout. Throughout the course, fairways tunnel through imposing tree lines, so players should consider making a preround stop at the club’s driving range or bribing the oldest oak in their neighborhood for favorable treatment from its fellow timbers.
