The consortium of professional instructors at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, which was cofounded by the legendary toe tapper himself, shepherds students of all ages and skill levels through lessons that span the style spectrum. Low-pressure private sessions allow enthusiastic teachers to fine-tune individual students' techniques and form, using their expert eyes and mechanical dancing shoes preprogrammed to do the Charleston. Patrons can learn how to cavort through classic waltz and foxtrot romps or swivel through the modern steps of salsa, swing, or samba. For dancers hoping to hoof it up in a social setting, the group practice parties provide a one-night extravaganza of instruction, demonstrations, and amateur firewalking.
Tonya Speed’s Dance Connection has connected restless feet with inspiring rhythms for more than 20 years in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. During one-hour Zumba classes, one of the studio's seasoned instructors coaxes shy dance muscles and hesitant limbs to sway, stomp, and groove to exotic Latin and international music. The sessions, limited to 20 participants, can decrease stress and shake off pesky shoulder anvils. Students should come in fitness attire and comfortable tennis shoes for the upbeat full-body workouts, designed to incinerate calories, drop pounds, increase energy levels, and pound unruly floorboards back into place. Zumba participants must be 12 years of age or older.
The instructors at Detour Fitness Studios seek to shake up tired workout routines with fun and challenging classes that range from introductory pole-dancing sessions to learning ballet skills on a vertical barre. Their signature Triple Interval Training program comprises four challenging classes, including a 45-minute full-body circuit and a 50-minute combination of spinning, boxing, and crunches, all of which aim to strengthen cores. In addition to group classes and burlesque workshops, they also oversee three levels of pole parties that can commemorate birthdays and bachelorette events.
The Rocket City Dance Club is all about learning and having FUN. Farley’s Ballroom fills with the rhythmic rush of fluttering feet during weekly group dance lessons and private instruction sessions. During six-week beginner courses, dancers can fly solo or flock together in group lessons for individuals or couples on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. Instructors draw from a rotating slate of styles that, like months on a bargain-bin calendar, change every three weeks, so participants will learn two distinct genres during each course period, including tango and rumba (November 7–December 12) or the waltz and cha-cha (December 19–January 23). For more intense tutelage, one-on-two private lessons instruct couples in ballroom, Latin, or swing dancing. Dance masters schedule private lessons on any day of the week, calibrating training intensity depending on dancers’ goals, prior experience, and ability to withstand getting served.
Established in 1954 and having garnered the Birmingham magazine 2010 award for Best Dance Classes, Dale Serrano Dance Inc. and its troupe of talented instructors lead children of all skill levels, aged 2–18, in classes ranging from jazz and ballet to hip-hop, tap, and cheer. Budding ballerinas gracefully plié and gallivant about the class, and musical-theater mavens learn the ins and outs of stage performance. Dancers who commit to additional months of vigilant rehearsal and practice can showcase their talents at the year-end recital or opt for impromptu performances at nearby weddings and city-council investitures.
