For some, the thrill of scouring consignment stores for the perfect gently used designer outfit can't be beat. For others, the thrill of shopping lies in purchasing a great dress that has never been worn by anyone else. Silver Lining Consignment Boutique and DeVon Designer Fashions have both types of shoppers covered.
DeVon Designer Fashions was born to offer women who sold their designer clothes to Silver Lining—but who didn't want to buy consignment items themselves—a place to shop retail. DeVon's new frocks and accessories, from designers such as Aryeh, Veronica M, and Yahada, arrive weekly.
Silver Lining Consignment Boutique was founded by former med-school student Sonja Pettus. Sonja was well-versed in the dual reward of consignment, which allowed her to not only make money on her used clothing, but also to upgrade her wardrobe. Back then, Sonja thought of opening a consignment boutique as an option once she retired. But when the economy took a turn and the country experienced a clothing drought, she decided the time was right, and Silver Lining Consignment Boutique was born.
Today, Sonja and her staff carefully curate the selection of gently-used and new women's clothing, keeping styles fresh and rotating with the seasons. There, ladies can find items from brands such as BCBG, J. Crew, and Yves Saint Laurent.
Registered interior designer Ramona Griffin has an eye for color. She has spent 18 years helping homeowners make the most of their interior spaces by figuring out how to work with homes' layout and lighting. She and her team also help their clients protect the environment with sustainable design techniques.
Though she typically photographs her clients in her Pelham studio or amid Alabama landscapes, Amanda Moses made an exception to that rule in late 2012. To celebrate the holiday season, she snapped a series of shots in Santa's workshop, a whimsical set where the bearded myth himself made his list, checked it twice, and mugged for the camera with Moses’s two young daughters.
When she's not framing Santa, Moses draws on more than 10 years of photographic expertise to capture images of families, children, weddings, and sexy boudoir pictures. To better grasp what kinds of poses or prints they most prefer, Moses likes to spend time getting to know her clients before each session—a practice that also comes in handy for putting subjects at ease for the shoot.
Night Owl Paper Goods makes all of its modern yet folksy hand-crafted paper goods by hand from sustainably harvested wood, letterpress, or a hybrid of the two. The Pup with Leaves design ($6), for example, blends Night Owl's eco-friendly yellow birch cards with an aww-inducing hand-drawn illustration. Stock up for the traditional round of holiday cards and break-up letters to Santa with the Pine Penguin ($16 for box of six), or regale a moody teenaged girl with a broad range of journals, jotters, and other gifts. And Night Owl's many customizable cards give the vicariously creative a one-of-a-kind way to announce birthdays, births, bar mitzvahs; formal raves, or a button factory promotion to Assistant to the Regional Hole-Puncher.
True allegiance to a sports team can’t be expressed with cheers alone. Devotees of Auburn and the University of Alabama’s sports programs can take their fandom to the next level at Sportsmania, with locations on the first floor of Parkway Place Mall and in the Carl T. Jones Target Shopping Center near Pier 1 Imports. The shop outfits visitors with a comprehensive array of team paraphernalia, including hats, goalie masks, magnets, flags, and even checkerboards and saltshakers. Daniel Moore prints and other pieces of home décor, meanwhile, help households demonstrate a passion for sports without having to hire a football player to sit on the mantel.
