In 1937, the nonprofit Anchorage Ski Club coalesced with the aim of preserving the Arctic Valley, which is surrounded by 320 acres of snow-dusted peaks that loom up to 4,000 feet high. The valley encompasses the 6-mile Arctic Valley Road as it weaves through sites for seasonal fun. During warm months, visitors chow down at the trailhead's picnic tables before hiking the 4-mile Rendezvous Peak trail, an easy path that overlooks the Anchorage Bowl, Cook Inlet, and other scenery that inspires awe and spontaneous poetry slams. As the sun sets on summer, wintry activities such as tubing and skiing take center stage. Ski routes range in difficulty, but each powdery course exudes the calm and isolation of backcountry with the safety features of a resort. Kids who are too young to surf the slopes can mold snow into forts, sled, or relax at Alpenglow Lodge. The sunny lodge lures in both youngsters and parents with two floors lofted over panoramic views of Anchorage.

The instructors at Alaska Kayak Academy share their love for sea kayaking by training and leading adventures in Alaska's rivers and coastal waters. Scheduled year-round, classes range from basic paddling instruction to deep-water rescue techniques. Guided trips cater to all levels of paddlers, with day trips along salmon runs and through the glacial ice of Prince William Sound. Rentals equip paddlers for independent exploration, refining skills, and humming quietly to themselves in peace. Alaska Kayak Academy also encompasses a store, where staff advise on gear such as new and used kayaks and the trendiest way to don a life jacket.

Housed within the climate-controlled expanse of a 4,300-square-foot enclosed facility, the virtual courses at Alaska Golf Shot provide a weather-free way for patrons to enjoy the game of golf year round. Patrons hone swings during one of 61 different game setups, including courses of varying difficulty, driving range simulations, and putting practice. Different slopes and angles add challenging terrain to each game’s equation, helping players control their shots during stays in the bunker or dips in the tar pit. The staff also utilizes leftover processing power by running a number of shooting simulations, including big game hunting, archery, and skeet shooting. Equipped to handle between-game snacks or post-putt physics lessons, the lounge and concession areas keep guests plugged in with big screen televisions, golf retail, and comfy seats.

Swim Like A Fish teaches kids to be comfortable and safe in the water. Founder Jeannette Menchinsky has made it a mission to prevent drownings ever since she was personally affected by one. Now, she organizes classes that teach children how to become expert swimmers with a patient, encouraging method. Taking place in a 4-feet-deep heated pool, private lessons can be scheduled between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. to accommodate most families' busy lives. In addition to kids' lessons, the school hosts classes that train adults who are beginners or triathletes and boaters who want to improve their skills.
