In order to reach the finish line of the Raid Series obstacle course, participants must hoist a sandbag, leap over marine hurdles, and scale a cargo net. The course is designed to emulate a run through the city streets, right up to the finish line, which is actually a climbing wall. It's one branch of The Raid Series, a trifecta of terrain-inspired 5Ks that also include the Mountain Raid and Beach Raid. After racers complete the course, which is on the sand of Old Orchard Beach just one hour and fifteen minutes from Boston, they can jet to the after-party to enjoy beer and live music.
Spreading across five floors of the Steuben Building, Steuben Athletic Club houses a plethora of exercise machines and fitness classes to help clients achieve their ideal physiques. Social exercisers can work alongside other fitness enthusiasts in any of the gym's classes, including body-strengthening yoga sessions and intense spinning courses, fast-paced regimens that utilize hardcore Ring Around the Rosie repetitions. Check the club's class schedule for up-to-date information.
Established in 1791, the Albany Institute of History & Art has been chronicling artistic expression longer than the Louvre, the Smithsonian, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Visitors acquaint themselves with an eternally revolving set of exhibits, including Hajo: An Artist’s Journey, which documents Hans-Joachim Richard Christoph's work in package design incorporating the bold, stylized graphics of the Berlin school of graphic design. Visitors can sidle up to one of the permanent exhibitions, such as the panoramic landscape art of The Landscape that Defined America: The Hudson River School or the ornamentally preserved remains of Ancient Egypt, an exhibit that spotlights the Nile, the Egyptian concept of afterlife, and ways to reposition a mummy into a hip-hop mummy.
The cycling experts at Broadway Bicycle Co. pair riders with mountain, road, triathlon, and hybrid bikes from top industry brands such as Redline and Specialized. In-house cycling savants offer fittings in a private room to ensure that a bike and its potential owner both enjoy long rides on the beach and passive-aggressive air-horn blasts. While their bikes are being adjusted or outfitted with new tires, cyclists can browse air pumps, helmets, and accessories to enhance bike performance. Parents dropping in to service their bikes or to try on cycling gear can send their wee ones to draw on the chalkboard walls of the children’s room.
