Bike World USA's staff all boast some level of expertise in bicycles, but the store's most incredible asset, according to the manager, is its deep shelves. "Our warehouses grant access to just about any replacement part on the spot," he says, "cutting wait time drastically." Whether someone brings in a bike for repair, tune-up, or soup-up, the team readily tackles the task, drawing upon thousands of brand-name components and accessories already in stock. They're also perfectly willing to follow instructions from experienced cyclists or make comprehensive recommendations to new ones, such as which helmet is a good fit or which set of training wheels is most invisible. In fact, the manager has only one piece of advice everyone needs to know before they come visit: "Drive up Sarnowski Drive. The next road over is riddled with potholes."
Whitewater Challengers' certified guides steer paddlers as young as 5 across the skipping surf of the Poconos’ Lehigh River Gorge, the Black River Canyon, and the Adirondacks’ Hudson, Moose, and Salmon rivers. In the rafting industry since 1975, the guides have collectively traveled more than 16 million miles of rapids. They chart courses that satisfy a range of experience levels, from beginning jaunts down gentle rapids to advanced battles through coursing foam and wicked currents.
The crew’s ultimate goal is to make rafting a fun adventure, which means that they take care of the business end, providing all safety equipment, transportation to launch points, and lessons for novices. When not on the water, the outdoors-loving crew also organizes mountain-biking and camping trips in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Few fitness organizations would place as much importance on a potluck as a pushup, but Friends in Motion is different. Instead of creating weight-loss programs that consist of strict drills and dieting, the staff designs plans that are built on a foundation of support and social interactions. Though it might seem cliché, the effectiveness is no joke. Team members bond with their teammates during interactive classes and outdoor team-building activities, increasing the chances that they'll return for more calorie-burning workouts.
