Monty Hawkins has been a coach for over two decades, extending a career on the pitch that began when he was just a kid. From starring as a teenaged phenom at Gladstone High School, captaining Oregon State’s first Division I soccer squad, and earning his professional stripes as a member of Germany’s TSG Tübingen, , Monty ascended through the athletic ranks faster than a rock climber riding a mountain goat. Today, he passes on his expertise to the next generation as co-owner of Tualatin Indoor Soccer. At the arena, stadium lights cast a blinding radiance across the freshly re-turfed, 186’x86’ field surrounded by 10-foot walls and glass, while up to 80 fans track the action in year-round adult and youth leagues. Monty also helps youngsters gear up for the spotlight at kids’ classes that promote not only athleticism, but also fun and friendship.
SoccerPlex’s moniker is deceiving. The athletic center boasts two indoor turf soccer fields—one measuring 185’x85’, the other 88’x36’. It also hosts women’s, men’s, and coed soccer leagues as well as kids’ soccer classes. But, in addition to its namesake sport, SoccerPlex also promotes sports and activities where it’s within the rules to use your hands, such as basketball, for which SoccerPlex offers adult leagues and kids’ programs. There are even classes for swimming, dancing, and martial arts as well as group fitness classes and Lego camps for young architects in training.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Swimming is a great fitness tool that people of all ages can enjoy. It is the one sport that positively cross trains for every other sport as well as being a sport that can be enjoyed your entire lifetime. How many football players are still playing in their 60s, 70s, 80s? Go to any Masters Swim Meet and there will be lots of seniors swimming.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain?? Why or why not?
Although it is important to work hard to make improvements, working to the point of actual pain usually means injury, which is never a good idea.
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
Learning to swim is both fun and functional. Classes are focused on making the process as fun as possible while continuing to move the students to becoming competent swimmers. We have high expectations for our students but want to keep lessons fun enough they will look forward to returning each class.
