The National Hispanic Cultural Center promotes the events and traditions of hispanic culture with an art museum, library, and store. The center?s art museum tantalizes eyes with a permanent collection full of work from traditional craftspeople and contemporary visionaries. Rotating current exhibitions showcase various collections including installations by Sandra Cisneros, acclaimed author of The House on Mango Street or collections of 200 beautiful clay figurines. Meanwhile, the center?s research library assembles 12,500 titles on Hispanic culture and history, and archives preserve documents in a haven more temperature-controlled than a refrigerator built out of air-conditioners. Exhibits offer glimpses into Hispanic life, such as Visas to Freedom, which recounts the valiant efforts of Spanish diplomats to save Jewish lives during the Holocaust.
The Albuquerque Latin Dance Festival celebrates New Mexico’s arts culture with a long weekend of dance performances and workshops. Each year, the program features dozens of workshops in salsa, mambo, flamenco, and bachata, led by a number of visiting dancers. Courses might include advanced technique sessions to hone dancers’ balance and posture, whereas beginners learn simple footwork in the salsa boot camp. Throughout the event, patrons can sample spicy foods or dance furiously until they need to visit the onsite cobbler. Guests can continue their rhythmic revelry at after-party social dances.

In its sixth year, the Gildan New Mexico Bowl invites the Temple Owls and Wyoming Cowboys to battle for pigskin glory alongside ample festivities. Wyoming freshman quarterback Brett Smith leads his team into the fray and casts feelings of inferiority into the hearts of opponents with his many accolades, including Mountain West’s freshman of the year and his seventh-grade yearbook’s praise for best hair. The Owls unease their rivals with the wiles of veteran players such as junior running back Bernard Pierce and senior defensive end Adrian Robinson, both of whom have been named to the All Mid-America Conference first team three times. Before settling down for an afternoon of tackles and touchdowns, audiences can pregame at a free fan fest replete with live dance and music performances and kids' zones outfitted with airbrush tattoos, obstacle courses, and the outsized football fanatic, Santa Claus.
Originally a TWA aircraft, the Southern Cross Douglas C-47 was adopted by the Army Air Corps to shuttle troops to the front. The twin-propeller plane survived World War II and in the ensuing years underwent a series of makeovers. Its career includes years spent as a reliable set of wings for Delta Air Lines, a troupe of skydiving enthusiasts, and at least one head of state. The C-47 is now meticulously restored to its original WWII-era condition and in the dutiful care of Greatest Generation Aircraft, a nonprofit organization that introduces 21st-century crowds to the C-47 during rides and aerial shows.
