Sometimes it takes more than medication to heal. That?s why acupuncturist Linda Wentz founded Holistic Touch Center and its mission to help hasten the healing process by offering services that extend beyond the body to incorporate the needs of the mind and spirit. There, Silvy Franco, the center's holistic esthetician, blends years of skin care experience with training in natural health and energy medicine to produce treatments that restore the body while rebalancing the mind and spirit. She reads each client's skin like a map, plotting out appropriate treatment courses that are delivered as part of one of the center's rituals, which include components ranging from traditional facials and detoxifying peels to Vitamin C infusions and cold stone massages. In addition to performing these rituals, Silvy also helps clients adapt these treatments for use in at-home skin care regimens, keeping epidermises glowing and well-adjusted to changes in seasonal weather.

Those interested in acupuncture may enlist in Kirsten Jacob, a trained herbalist who received her Masters of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Han University of Traditional Medicine in Tucson, Az. When she is not helping her clients attain inner peace through eastern healing techniques, she tends to her kids while indulging in reading, writing, and traveling.

You may sweat when in the Hot Seat at Pretty Lady Pole Fit, but you'll be doing anything but sitting still. That's because the Hot Seat workout class combines jazz, hip-hop, and ballet dance moves that students perform behind, in front of, and even on top of a chair. This is just one of several adrenaline-boosting classes that add sultry twists to fitness routines. All the while, the instructors work to instill self esteem and confidence in women of all ages and body types.

At the head of the staff is Arminta Crosby, who exemplifies the venue's balance between strength and beauty. She is a certified personal trainer, a pole-dancer, a model, and even a competitive football player. Arminta and her team of specialists lead classes ranging from beginner's pole-dancing to Zumba and hip-hop aerobics, as well as private in-studio or mobile parties that guide guests through styles such as belly-dance, chair dance, or strip tease.

The world is a playground, according to the stunt artists and gymnasts who helm Urban Evolution. At this CNN- and Channel 11 WBAL -featured gym, there are no treadmills or stationary bikes. Instead, dance-like movements and acrobatic leaps propel visitors toward apexes of fun and fitness. To ready physiques for such feats, ropes, trapezes, and gymnastics equipment facilitate body-weight exercises that build balance, flexibility, and coordination. Seasoned instructors oversee the training space, teaching students how to jump, climb, crawl, and tumble as safely as possible during movement-focused classes such as Parkour, Free Running, and Aerial Acrobatics. Kettlebells and other functional strength-training tools power UrbanFit conditioning workouts, which give participants the brawn to perform everyday tasks such as pushing lawnmowers, lifting grocery bags, and drawing sleighs filled with lazy reindeer.

Q&A with Berhane Mehari, Trainer

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

Every client is different. But with so many fad diets that make unrealistic promises, the disappointment that comes from not achieving those results often causes people to quit. I'm different with my clients. I tell them from the start that they must be 100% committed to both exercise and a strict nutritional plan to reach their goals. I'm available to them in any way I can to support them. Once they start seeing the results of their hard work, they are motivated to even work harder and never quit.

When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?

I've been interested in fitness for as long as I can remember. I first started training my friends when I was in grade school. Having my own business as fitness trainer is not just a business to me; it is my passion.
