I started working full time as a hairdresser in 1996, love what I do for a living, and enjoy making my clients feel special when they are in my salon. I was born and raised in the UK and try to travel back "home" as often as I can to see family and friends and also catch up on the latest hair designs and techniques, which will work their way over to the states. Continuing education is always a must. I was able to work in a salon last year in the UK for several days, which I found fun. I also have been told I have a dry humor.
Do you offer your customers any extra perks?
We have magazines and can always offer clients a cup of coffee.
When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
I started coloring my mother's hair when I was 8 years old, and I guess hairdressing started to develop from there. When I was a student at Oxford, I was always cutting everyone's hair, and this continued after I returned to Texas. I have always had a passion for hair and how it looks, feels, and what suits a person's face and personality. One day, I just signed up for beauty school and got my license and have enjoyed what I do for a living.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a client?
When they can't keep their hands out of their hair after I have finished, and the big smile they give me when I am done. It's also nice when they refer me to their friends and family.

Syreeta J’s love for styling hair blossomed organically. She mastered her skills while growing up, as she worked on her family members’, friends’, and her own hair, and eventually landed her first job as an assistant stylist at age 16. However, after she dealt with skin irritations that caused hair loss and her mother suffered an allergic reaction that affected her hair, she decided focus her energies on haircare in addition to styling.
With a suite of healthy products in hand, she expertly applied extensions and hair replacements to create lustrous, full heads of hair for clients of all ages. She uses products from Pravanna, Joico, Mazani, and Niarobi, explaining, "I have spent years trying different products and these … are close to what I believe in and have great reputations." She also restores damaged hair with deep-conditioning treatments and aldehyde-free keratin treatments when she’s not cutting and coloring manes.
The first haircut Julie Outlaw ever gave was on an extremely high-profile client. Barbie, to be exact. Julie was just a child at the time, testing out her skills on a beloved toy, but the experience sparked what would become a lifelong passion. Now with 30+ years under her blowdryer holster, the licensed stylist channels all this drive—along with her outgoing personality—into turning new clients into regulars. She invites them into her laid-back salon for, as her website states, styles that range from "fun to funk." This includes all-over color, bridal up-dos, and—of course—haircuts.
Becky Young, the owner of Turning Heads, has nine years of experience as a stylist. With six of those years styling for weddings, she has a particular knack for updos and makeup application. But, her skill basket also brims with color work, conditioning treatments, and Brazilian blowouts. A further testament to her dedication, Becky has continued to hone her haircutting talent by training with Vidal Sassoon.
