10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is a distinct form of grappling, one largely kept under wraps by its creator Eddie Bravo. But martial arts studios across the world teach it—including 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Bethlehem. After obtaining Eddie's blessing, the studio's two instructors now teach the 10th Planet system's three distinct moves: the rubber guard, the half-guard, and the twister. In the rubber guard, grapplers pull their opponents to the mat with a leg wrapped around his shoulders and neck. The half-guard involves hooking your legs around one of your opponents, keeping them in a locked position. And then, there's the twister; during this fearsome maneuver, fighters put opponents in a choke-hold and quite literally twist their bodies to incapacitate them.
Rather than a competition, the instructors at Lehigh Valley Shihou-ken Karate treat their self-defense style as an art form. Sensei Charlie draws from more than 40 years of martial-arts training to lead his team in training students as young as 9 or old enough to be technically immortal. In classes tailored to specific ability levels, the instructors drill students in strikes, blocks, and kata—a choreographed series of fighting moves. All classes focus on the shihou-ken style, which blends elements from three forms of traditional Japanese karate and also introduces principles of muay thai, boxing, and judo.

The instructors at Todd’s Martial Arts believe the practice of martial arts is a vehicle that can transport students to a place of greater self-confidence and self-control. Of course, the facility also recognizes that getting into shape and chopping down trees with roundhouse kicks are probably students’ priorities, too. That’s where Todd Sensinger comes in. As the head instructor at TMA, Todd is a second-degree black belt, and has been teaching and practicing the sport for 15 years. Todd and a team of certified instructors teach students ages six and up. They also maintain a clean, welcoming dojang, or “training facility.”
The instructors at Leading Edge Martial Arts believe all MMA should be done in the name of one common goal: self-defense. Rather than prepare their students for competition, they teach the techniques of kickboxing, judo, and jiujitsu as a means of protection. That's where the similarity between adult and youth classes ends, though. The trainers promote confidence and discipline to kids, while emphasizing fitness and stress relief for adults. The adult Cage Fitness program, for instance, torches calories with 30 minutes of intense interval training, split across five-minute sections. They also offer a modified version for children, designed to instill confidence and empathy for birds.
