In the intimate confines of Atwater Playhouse, a new 45-seat theater, acting teachers impart the skills behind not acting. Most commonly known as method acting, their style hinges on actually feeling a character's emotions, rather than simply mimicking them. This immersive approach, used by greats such as Meryl Streep and Al Pacino, has landed students roles in productions such as The Dark Knight Rises, Drive, and Weeds.
On this night only Dianne Reeves belts it out on one of the largest, most star-strut-upon stages in Los Angeles. Orchestra-level seats place you right up front (seating is anything below the balcony section), close enough to feel all of the soulful notes roar. Reeves, a musical titan, part R&B star, part storyteller, and pure jazz from voice to toe, improvises and revises the genre's tradition, singing always her present moment's gospel. She has earned so many Grammys and other shiny accolades that she donates them to children to fill up their birthday piñatas. Her eclectic career defies simplistic labels: she sung the soundtrack to period-piece heavyweight Good Night and Good Luck, closed the 2002 winter Olympic games, and broke through a seemingly impassable cultural barrier by being the first jazz singer to perform in the Arab kingdom of Qatar. With a voice that holds more soul than purgatory, it's an evening not be missed.
Knightsbridge Theatre's talented cadre of thespians presents a schedule of lovingly crafted stagings of classic theatrical texts in an intimate, newly restored theater. Five- and 10-seat subscriptions allow patrons to use their seats any way they like, bringing along a mass of friends for one show or sitting on a friend’s shoulders and plopping down into a single seat, or gifting tickets to a friend, family member, or favorite landscaper. Upcoming shows include Steel Magnolias, the original musical comedy Bergeracky, Rostand's comical French romance Cyrano De Bergerac and the medieval tale of intrigue The Lion in Winter. Shows take place in a renovated 1920s silent-movie house that contains just 99 seats, creating an intimate atmosphere that allows actors to connect to the audience without the use of duct tape.
Throughout the 1970s, KC & the Sunshine Band soundtracked countless nights of disco balls spinning and bellbottoms flapping with hits such as "That's The Way (I Like It)" and "I'm Your Boogie Man." Each cut teems with upstroke guitar intermingling with celebratory bursts from the horn section and the full-bodied tenor of frontman Harry Wayne "K.C." Casey. Whether he's telling the audience to get down on that very night or shake their collective booty, K.C. gleefully belts partying orders like a drill sergeant at a singles mixer as he claps and patrols the Greek's outdoor stage. The pine trees of Griffith Park tower over his funk collective while they blast their hook-laden cuts and infectious optimism into the night.
A coral tree sprouts from the center of Rockwell Table & Stage's outdoor dining area, illuminated by both an in-ground sidelight and the moonlight pouring through the slats of exposed wooden beams. This atmospheric patio is a fitting arena for the menu's artful plates, such as the goat cheese and truffle ravioli, which chefs bathe in roasted-tomato sauce and pine-nut aioli. Inside, meanwhile, bartenders furnish glasses with signature tonics and glasses of wine as live musicians summon toe taps and head nods from the elevated stage. Plush booths, flickering table candles, and stone walls emanate rustic charm, creating the perfect vibe for a first date or a romantic game of Dungeons and Dragons.
