Sundance Yoga Studio's staff of certified instructors helps students create strong, pliable physiques by working through challenging sessions of Vinyasa classes.Yoga classes emphasize proper spinal alignment while connecting the mind, body, and fitness-fanatic alter egos. Each studio location hosts a six-day schedule with advanced and beginner-friendly classes to accommodate students of all experience levels. During classes, mat mavens follow instructors through calming deep-breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques in addition to a series of healing postures and animal impressions. A noncompetitive atmosphere encourages each practitioner to practice to his or her skill level as instructors lead with demonstration, verbal cues, and hands-on instruction, helping students hone ample amounts of muscle strength, flexibility, and balance along the way.
Q&A with Victoria Treadway, Owner of The Music Connection of Pearland
Tell us about your business.
We are a family-owned-and-operated music studio. We teach all styles of music, from jazz and blues to pop and classical. We teach individual lessons and group classes, primarily in piano, for ages 2 to adult. Piano is the most sought-after instrument we offer, [but] we also teach drums and guitar.
What makes your business stand out?
[First of all,] we are the only music studio in Pearland to offer group classes. They are more affordable, more fun because of the setting, and create a more independent student. We have our own curriculum, so we are able to give songs that are more well known and fun. [Second of all,] we are the only music studio in Pearland to offer Mommy and Me and preschool piano classes. Our program focuses on the piano and teaches theory through characters and different activities. Once the students have completed the different levels, they'll know the notes on the keyboard [and be able to] identify the dynamics of music, find the rhythm and recognize note values, and play beginner songs.
What inspired you to run this business?
This business has been in the family for 15 years. Once I [the daughter] got involved when I was going through college, I saw the potential to move from a business operating from home to a music studio. The reason we started the classes was for the student that wasn't self-motivated. Some students need a more fun environment than one-on-one lessons. I also strongly believe in starting your children in music lessons as early as you can to help children with their fine-motor skills, developing perfect pitch, and loads of other skills.
What is your most popular offering?
Group piano classes—once a week for 45 minutes—[and] individual piano [lessons, held] once a week for 30 minutes. [We also offer] preschool piano classes [and] Mommy and Me piano classes, [both held] once a week for 35 minutes.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a customer?
One of our students [was] in shock over the amazing progress her son had made over the course of a year. He started as a beginner, and the next year he was playing songs like Solfeggietto and Moonlight Sonata. She recommended so many students to us. We called her our biggest fan.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
Watching the students' progress and teaching them different styles of music. It's rewarding to see our students develop a love for music.
Anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We care about each and every student that comes through our door. We never give up on someone who takes a little longer than average to develop their musical skills.
Purcurscents Candles specializes in helping people bring an extra bit of warmth into their homes in the form of gently flickering candles. These glowing accent pieces are made entirely of pure, additive-free soy wax. An entirely natural formula has the added benefit of a longer-lasting scent, which ensures that rooms maintain a subtle hint of lavender or vanilla for longer than with traditional candles. Additionally, Purcurscents Candles uses cleaner and smoother burning cotton wicks in all of its products—a relatively small touch that helps significantly prolong the life of a candle. Although the staff mainly helps customers find the perfect candle or candle holder, they also offer classes, teaching students how to make their own soy candles within the comfort of their own home or favorite wax museum.
With backgrounds in law enforcement, state-certified instructors Nick Villalona and David Green II hope that no conflict ever escalates to violence. But should people choose to prepare themselves by carrying a firearm, Nick and David want them to do so in a safe, responsible manner. That's why they specialize in qualifying clients for a state concealed-handgun license, also known as a CHL. Leading both classroom and range training, the duo verses students in the basics of safely handling and storing a firearm, as well as what rights and responsibilities come with holding a CHL. Their meticulous and patient approach has earned praise from the likes of Matt Patrick, radio personality on KPRC AM 950 and KTRH AM 740.
If you saw someone running down the street with a sledgehammer, you would most likely think that person was crazy, but that's just another day in the life of the coaches at CrossFit Armada. The coaches—all of whom are certified across multiple CrossFit modalities—believe that the road to physical fitness is not paved with repetitive sessions on the treadmill. Each day welcomes a new workout of the day, which may incorporate one of more elements of gymnastics, weight training, and cardiovascular conditioning using equipment such as free weights, climbing ropes, and gymnastics rings. One day, students might do pushups and swing kettlebells within the 10,000-square-foot gym, and the next, they might venture outside to run or pound massive tires with a sledgehammer until they agree to personally train them. The workouts are intense, but scalable for all levels of athletes from professional athletes to absolute beginners.
In addition to traditional CrossFit classes, the coaching team also leads specialty courses such as CrossFit Endurance and CrossFit Olympic Lifting, as well as personal-training sessions.
