YMCA of Amarillo has opened its doors to peoples of all faiths, races, income levels, and abilities since 1937. Today staffers continue to uphold the YMCA’s core values of honesty, acceptance, and fairness as they ensure each location is a safe place for members to play, exercise, and strengthen family bonds weakened by overzealous games of Monopoly. Adults can take aquatic, boot-camp, and Zumba classes or workout within fitness centers filled with cardio and strength-training equipment. Kids, meanwhile, can join in on youth basketball and soccer matches or stimulate their imagination, mental development, and growth in afterschool programs, homework-assistance sessions, and art classes. To help guests of all ages get in touch with their creative sides, local artists host writing groups, dance courses, and photography classes.
YMCA of Amarillo emphasizes the importance of cultural enrichment in their community as well—they partner with such community-based organizations as Boy Scouts of America, Lone Star Ballet, and Amarillo Opera. They also further strengthen the community by offering much-needed funding to children and families who cannot afford the full cost of any of these progressive programs.
As they enter the training circle at Curves, female guests come face-to-face with the smiles of other women. And just as points on a circle share a common distance from the circle's center, workout participants share the experiences of those nearby by trading stations throughout the 30-minute training session. One minute is spent on a piece of strength-training equipment built for feminine frames and designed to work two opposing muscle groups with a single movement. Exercisers then move on to a recovery station, where they run, jog, or dance to maintain heart rates and keep platforms in place during momentary losses of gravity.
At Flow Yoga & Pilates Studio, certified fitness instructor and personal trainer Gina Domme teaches YogaFit and Peak Pilates regimens to shuttle clients toward their heath and fitness goals. The YogaFit system enlists the moves of Hatha yoga's therapeutic practice, using the postures to increase balance, strength, and flexibility. As a co-owner of Peak Pilates Personal Training—a business that trains instructors in effective methods for teaching the classic exercise—her classes brim with top-shelf expertise in the core-bolstering, spine-supporting workout, whether it's performed on mats, astride Reformer machines, or perched atop Joseph Pilates' statue during annual pilgrimages.
A dancer since the age of 2, McCall Catherine Money has been dancing almost as long as she’s been walking. Today, she leads party-like Zumba classes that combine fun and energetic music with Latin-inflected moves to help blast away fat and tone muscles. Having trained in dance styles such as jazz, tap, hip-hop, and ballet, McCall is able to keep workouts fresh and exciting each week.
The Fitness Lounge encourages outer and inner health in a workout-gym environment with the personality of an intimate studio. Inventive and stimulating classes like Piloxing (which combines Pilates and boxing), Flirty Tease & Tone, Core Cycling, and Relax & Revive Yoga keep muscles from getting bored and texting stretch jokes to their friends during class. Instructors—all certified in their fitness specialty—tailor workouts to individuals’ goals and shoelace length. Food and human reconcile their differences during a nutrition consultation to determine challenges and goals. Follow-up sessions, held either at the gym or in a living room, restaurant, grocery store, or cornfield of the customer's choice, inspire food choices that are both healthy and tasty. The Fitness Lounge’s pep talks, menu parsing, and progress reports work in conjunction with fitness classes to decrease weight and ramp up energy.
