The highly trained technicians at Jiffy Lube tend to about 24 million customers each year with services such as the Signature Service oil-change package, which promotes the longevity of each vehicle. Staffers acknowledge that oil plays a crucial role in maximizing the lifespan of each car—it cools the motor and prevents moving parts from deteriorating. More than 20,000 technicians who have completed an extensive training program certified by the National Institute Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) nurse vehicles at Jiffy Lube.

In addition to performing oil changes, Jiffy Lube’s savants perform air-filtration, electricity, and windshield services, among others. The technicians’ quality pledge includes a commitment to transparency, which stipulates that they will inform car owners of any necessary services, complete a service only after it has been approved, and refuse to replace windshields with Saran wrap.

The Amherst College?owned Emily Dickinson Museum preserves the memory and work of the poet and hyphen master by maintaining the estate where she lived and composed many of her nearly 1,800 poems. The museum includes The Homestead, her birthplace and longtime residence, which stands near The Evergreens, where her brother, Austin, lived with his family. Emily and her siblings were all avid gardeners, cultivating flowers and hedges throughout their 3-acre estate. Emily herself maintained a conservatory for her collection of exotic plants, and she drew endless inspiration from her natural surroundings for her work.

The Emily Dickinson Museum welcomes field trips for groups of students and schedules events throughout the year to celebrate her poetry and role in American literary history. Interactive poetry discussion groups meet at various Amherst locations, keeping Dickinson's style relevant by communicating only in rhyming quatrains.

The University Club’s New England roots are evident not just in its creamy, New England-style clam chowder, but in its very building. Nestled in two colonial-era farmhouses, one of which is the oldest, most wrinkly house in Amherst, the eatery is a venerable institution to the history of Massachusetts. The Boltwood-Stockbridge house contains the Daniel Chester French room, named for the Lincoln Memorial Statue sculptor who lived there as a child, and the Tory room, where nine loyalists hid during the American Revolution.

Today, the loyalists have given way to diners feasting on fare that changes with the seasons. Dinners consist of upscale proteins such as new york strip steak, braised lamb shank, and pan-seared salmon complemented by a farmer’s-market risotto loaded with fresh local produce. Alternatively, lunchtime visitors—or diners sampling the bar’s lighter fare menu—can nosh on a Black Angus burger or a jalapeño crab-cake po' boy.

At Amherst Laser and Skin Care Center, aesthetic treatments go beyond ordinary waxing treatments and cleansing facials. Along with these basic offerings, Dr. Robert Weitzman and his dedicated staff use state-of-the-art lasers for a number of treatments, from banishing unwanted hair to spurring hair growth with a futuristic iGrow laser helmet. Other laser treatments include skin rejuvenation, body sculpting, and tattoo removal.

Aestheticians also incorporate natural and holistic elements into a number of treatments designed to nourish the skin and help maintain a refreshed, youthful appearance. During the microdermabrasion treatment, a DiamondTome wand helps remove dead skin cells. The process can promote new skin cell growth and stimulate collagen while treating fine lines, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and more.

Relaxation reigns supreme at Elements Hot Tub Spa, where reprieve from the daily grind awaits in the form of bubbling hot tubs and the masterful hands of fully licensed massage therapists. Behind the doors of five themed areas, the crystal-clear tubs send toasty tides surging across limbs from up to 108 hydrotherapy jets. Inside the Fire room, visitors sink into 104-degree tubs amid warm tones of burnished slate, whereas out in the Air garden, breezes move tree boughs across stucco walls, replicating the gentle rustling synonymous with nature or book-themed scavenger hunts in a library. Stress sapping is also available through trips to the facility's infrared sauna and steam rooms, and through services such as deep-tissue massages, hot-stone treatments, and chocolate facials.

A student of Chinese medicine for more than 25 years, Hayley Mermelstein supplements her acupuncture and shiatsu massage with energy healing from the Tong Ren tradition of her mentor Tom Tam. Her studies began in 1987 under the guidance of Janet Murphy at the University of Massachusetts, where she designed her own major in shiatsu, and she opened a practice immediately upon graduation. Today, Mermelstein also leads meditation classes following the principles of her teacher Ellen Tadd. In 2003, Hayley completed her formal acupuncture training, graduating from the New England School of Acupuncture and White Pine Healing Arts and earning a mortarboard that doubles as an emergency massage bed.
