South Pacific—a story originally brought to life by Broadway greats Rodgers and Hammerstein—presents a titillating and tangled web of love lines, country allegiances, and tetherball death matches, set against the backdrop of World War II. Power-ballad seeking patrons will swoon as they're swept away by the melodies of "Bali Ha'I," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," and "Some Enchanted Evening," resounding within the sonically engineered Discovery Theatre. With its two-tiered seating area, swooping curved walls, and a ceiling of silver-saucer acoustic disks, the theater treats earthbound ears to an out-of-body experience unknown since Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Musical .

With its craggy mountains, monochrome tundra, and verdant valleys, Alaska itself stands as a monument to the beauty and power of nature. Focusing on the state's prehistory, the Alaska Museum of Science and Nature's sprawling collection of artifacts educates the public with engrossing and educational dioramas and displays. Among the museum’s notable exhibits is its newest installation, Ice, which delves into the profound geological changes wrought by the last Ice Age. Likewise, the Schmidt Mine exhibit lets visitors touch and pick up craggy specimens from the collection, including meteorites and fluorescent stones. Ancient mammoth bones and fearsome saber-tooth tiger jaws show patrons the fauna encountered by Alaska's first human inhabitants, whereas fully assembled dinosaur skeletons transport viewers even further back in time, way before the Jurassic Park movie came out.

Southern hospitality dictates that guests be taken into the home, fed, and kept cozy for the night. But up north, the Alaska Travel Adventures team warmly welcomes visitors by urging them to veer far from their front door. They help guests explore the landscape by designing whitewater-rafting adventures, kayaking tours, nature-trail walks, or panning for gold and sharing bits of history. For lunch, riverside campfires grill fillets of wild salmon and inspire stories from the Klondike gold rush. To complete the day, Alaska Travel Adventures keeps a fleet of newer-model RVs for guests to sleep in so they don't have to set up tents or convince a bear to share its cave.

Q&A with Jennifer Stratton, Owner

As the old adage says, "Stuff happens." What training do you and your staff have to stay ahead of the unexpected?

Owner Jennifer Stratton is not content to sit idle. Aside from her creative pursuits, she is also currently seeking a degree in early childhood development. Jennifer has taught art classes based on literature, story-writing workshops, card making and personal publishing.

What is the experience customers can expect, and how do you make it special?

We are an indoor play and art studio for families. We offer art classes for all ages?even grownups. Whether you choose to build, imagine, experience, create, or perform, we will cater to your creative needs and families will easily move through our playscapes.

What?s your favorite part of your job?

At the play studio, we get to experience the occurrence of actual learning: real, organic learning through play, not just curriculum in books. Unscheduled play encourages literacy skills, creativity, and problem solving, and as a business owner I love hearing kids laugh, learn, and play.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

No one is too old to learn through play.
