Alaska Fighting Championship pits some of the state’s toughest combatants against each other in cards packed with intense mixed martial arts matches. Season after season, AFC sets the stage for homegrown fighters to showcase their skills. From lightweight to super heavyweight, AFC events feature bruisers of all makes and models, each vying to climb the ranks and become a champion in their weight class. All AFC matches unfold at George M. Sullivan Sports Arena, where fans can sit close enough to the action to hear punches land and feed the fighters handfuls of candy between rounds.
Above a wall-spanning mirror, All Life is Yoga clearly displays its key instruction for its clientele: "Breathe." With this focus on optimizing the respiratory process, patient instructors teach students to breathe, stretch, and pose their way to healthier bodies during different styles of yoga classes: hot yoga, kids’ yoga, restorative/prenatal yoga, active (Vinyasa) yoga, and meditation-based sessions. Circuit-training classes round out the schedule and work both minor and major muscle groups via a series of one-minute intervals.
The thud of well-aimed balls precedes the satisfying crack of crashing pins, a sound that signifies victory for competitors spread across North Bowl's family-friendly lanes. A retreat for seasoned and novice bowlers alike, the alley keeps competitions balanced with lightweight balls and bumper lanes available upon request. Booming music and flashing disco lights herald a shift from open bowling to neon bowling—special sessions on Fridays and Saturdays when athletes face off or dance off in a nightclub atmosphere. Parties and leagues bond bowlers of all ages via lively recreation, and fundraisers enlist the sport to benefit worthy causes. On-site snacks and libations fuel sporty endeavors until closing time or the nachos gain self-awareness.
Air-filled structures within Pump It Up's indoor play-haven offer hours of safe bouncing enjoyment for youngsters two and older. Kids leap around in bounce houses during drop-in pop-in playtime sessions during weekdays, where they interact with other bouncers while getting exercise. An obstacle course adds challenges to their enjoyment, and inflatable slides bring kids back down to earth to start games anew. Pump It Up's space can be rented out for private events, such as birthdays, grade-school graduations, and a kid's first steps on the moon. Not just for children, Pump it Up also hosts teambuilding corporate events for adults and hosts family play times where parents are encouraged to jump along with kids.
Alaska Dance Promotions hosts rhythmic, Latin-flavored classes for budding rug-cutters during Alaska’s largest dance festival, the Alaska Salsa Festival. Students who opt for the salsa-immersion program dive into a sequence of 12 weekly classes built around a cumulative curriculum that discourages drop-ins as thoroughly as steel ceilings. Alternatively, patrons can bolster their cardio fitness with the athletic dance moves and international rhythms of Zumba classes, opt for one-on-one lessons, or follow group classes as they roam through spicy modalities such as bachata, cha cha, and meringue. Partnerless dancers are welcomed and smoothly paired with fellow students, and classes require no specialty gear, only comfortable outfits in breathable fabrics.
From April through September, baseballs and softballs hurl toward awaiting batters in The Cage's eight outdoor batting cages. As batters warm up, they choose between slow pitch or fast pitch options for softball batting and from four speeds for baseball pitching. Each $1 token grants participants 12 chances to practice their bunting, homering, or pausing balls in midair if they believe hard enough. Monday through Friday from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., players can visit the facility to work on their batting, stock up on baseball apparel or gloves at the facility's shop, or celebrate a birthday with packages that include cage-rental time, a cake, and a gift for the celebrator.
