Dolphin Dive Center owner and master diver Tim Bridgham has a philosophy a lot of people can relate to: we spend much of our lives standing on our feet, sitting on our butts in chairs, or sleeping?so getting in the water can be a blissful alternative. As a full-service dive center, Dolphin Dive is a place where students and seasoned divers can get all their gear, as well as the knowledge to put it to good use. Beginners can splash into the heated, indoor pool to get the hang of breathing underwater during the try scuba course, while more seasoned divers and mermen in disguise can take the advanced open water class.

Escaping the heat becomes a priority for city dwellers in the summer, and the people of Atlanta have just such a refuge at Lake Chatuge. The two-hour-away locale boasts crystal-clear waters, a mountain backdrop, and Mountain Wake, a water sports shop that rents wakeboards, standup paddleboards, and flyboards to visitors.

if you're giving wakeboarding a try, the set-up includes a system in which participants are pulled 500 feet down the lake while holding onto a handle connected to a cable 20 feet off the water. Anyone new to the sport might want to try out a lesson first. And because Mountain Wake's coaches now stand on paddleboards to stay close to riders, beginners no longer have to ask their coach questions solely by tying a note around a seabird's foot. The staff also teaches people how to soar above the water or dive in and out of the waves like a dolphin during flyboard lessons.

Youngblood Bicycles' staff of avid cyclists fine-tune two-wheeled steeds with expert service and outfit riders in gear from pro brands, including Bell, Hincapie, Giro, and more. Veteran mechanics can call upon their bike-whispering skills to fix flats ($17), provide tune-ups ($65), or prevent bicycles that operate too well from becoming self-aware. Helpful pedal-pushers can also employ their passion for cycling to capably guide buyers through any purchase. A stylish logo jersey ($90) and pair of bib shorts ($110) by Hincapie keep riders sleek, aerodynamic, and in compliance with modesty laws, and a protective Bell Influx helmet ($65) shields your thoughts from divebombing carrier pigeons.

Push Skateshop, which TransWorld Skateboarding recognized as "Shop of the Month" in December 2007, fuses a full-service skateshop with a contemporary art gallery. It adorns its walls with belly-up decks ($35–$60), some of which are the shop’s own line and all of which are painted with museum-worthy motifs. Riders who select a deck can affix trucks ($45–$65), bearings ($11–$55), wheels (most are $30–$35), and sidecars for squirrels. Lest skaters lack the proper fashion for freestyling, Push Skateshop flatters feet with more than 75 kinds of shoes and protects men's and women's bodies with stylish asphalt armor from more than 50 brand-names, including Zero, Krooked, Planet Earth, Volcom, RVCA, Matix, and Emerica.
