Indian Trail Golf Center acts as a peaceful practice oasis for players to perfect swings and hone their skills. Upon arrival, golfers insert tokens into the ball dispenser to receive their allotted balls, which cascade into the bucket and jostle to be the first off the tee. The driving range is home to synthetic mats and natural-grass stations. In inclement weather, 10 covered hitting stations keep players dry as they blast balls into lower orbit and try to dislodge hail from rain clouds. After buckets have been depleted and swings satisfied, players can head to the practice green and squeeze in as many tap-ins as daylight allows. Indian Trail Golf Center stays open from 9 a.m. to dusk every day of the week except Tuesday, when it opens at noon.

Working at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 1994 World Cup are a few of the sporting events on camp director Shelly Watkins's resumé, which she draws on to run a summer camp for kids of all ages. A mother herself, she believes in giving each child individual attention, recognition, and respect, rewarding campers with high-fives and compliments for jobs well done. Together with assistant camp director Cortney Spiegel, she runs fun-packed day camps focused on arts, sports, field trips, and specialty programs. Professional counselors work with pintsize Pacinos in the Lights, Camera, Action class to make short films; kick off Nerf-themed sports events in the Nerf Extravaganza class; or venture out to bowling, movies, rollerblading, and laser tag during the Mega Adventure Field Trip. Shelly and her friendly crew also lead precamp and aftercamp activities for early-morning and evening supervision, and junior camp for campers aged 4¬–7 or 10-year-olds having their pre-preteen life crisis.

At Quarry Ridge, golfers work on a full bag of golf skills, ranging from miniature course tap-ins to 300-yard wallops on the driving range to shot-making selections on the 9-hole executive course. Six out of nine holes on the executive course measure less than 300 yards, demanding accuracy over rocket-fueled golf balls on six par 4s and three par 3s. If players want to add distance to their drives or hone shorter shots, they can log some practice time on the lighted driving range, complete with both grass tees and covered mats. Nearby, a miniature-golf course invites all ages of putters to roll golf balls over the 18-hole layout while laying chase to the par of 54.

During his time as a combatant in World War II, Joe Hawald became infatuated with the medieval castles he encountered throughout Europe. More than three decades later, in 1979, his wartime curiosity became a peacetime muse, leading him to construct a castle-inspired clubhouse in front of Lum International Golf Course. Though the course has changed ownership?and adopted a name that pays direct homage to its novel clubhouse?the stone castle out front has been steadfast.

The medieval motifs extend to the golf course itself, where carts cross rivers over arched, stone bridges that would not be out of place in a biopic about Richard the Lion Heart's amateur golf career. The course winds through scenic terrain that often attracts wildlife such as white tails and waterfowl.
