In 1963, Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) and the Circle Gallery were established to develop professional exhibition opportunities for the local art community. The MFA primarily supports emerging and underrepresented artists with member-only art shows and small exhibitions at Circle Gallery, its home since 1968. To showcase artwork from across the country, MFA sponsors national exhibitions at Circle Gallery, furnishing innovative new works for the local population to explore. Educational opportunities also engage local artists and art enthusiasts with programs specifically aimed at underserved populations including youth and adults with learning disabilities.
In 1983, "Beefalo" Bob DiMartino began a small-scale catering operation built around no-frills, classic recipes of pit-roasted barbecue, growing his business to include a carry-out joint, sports bar, and even an upscale banquet hall. Bob's process is simple: slow cooking beef, ham, turkey, slabs of ribs and morsels of pork and chicken over smoking hickory fires and not cutting corners with gas jets or heat vision. The sports bar garnishes these backyard-style feasts with plates of oysters, lump crab cakes, and strip steak, as well as sports games on 20 big-screen TVs and rivers of cold beer.
True to its roots as a catering outfit, Beefalo Bob's supplies parties of up to 10,000 with bull roasts, crab feasts, and roasted pigs, as well as rentals of tents, tables, and moon bounces. Fancy occasions find a home in the 250-person Reflections Hall, decked out with chandeliers, DJs, a fireplace, hints of sparkly gold, and a wide-open hardwood dance floor.
Okello Dunkley designs his workshops for students who have just bought or are thinking of buying a DLSR camera but are mystified by its myriad gadgets and gizmos. The accessible nature of these classes has helped Okello spread them into more than 30 locations across the country, where students as young as 11 learn how to take a digital camera off automatic mode and manually manipulate ISO light sensors and aperture openings.
The fourth annual Annapolis Arts, Crafts, and Wine Festival will draw a wide array of artists and craftsmen to the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, where they'll exhibit their oeuvres to curious onlookers. Visitors examine booths full of paintings, photos, and jewelry and watch as craftsmen manipulate metal, clay, leather, or preconceived notions of reality.
When not soaking up arts and crafts, festival-goers can check out the live jazz playing all afternoon, or indulge in the food and wine tastings. Specialty food exhibitors offer samples of flavored olive oils and vinegars, dips, pumpkin rolls, and more. Children can enjoy the Kids' Art area, with musical and theatrical performances, face painting, and storytelling.
When Pete and Kate Vonderheide moved from Hawaii to Annapolis to live closer to their family, they thought they'd have to give up a career of ocean kayaking to resume responsible office jobs. Soon they recognized the historic city harbor's lack of kayak tours and knew they couldn't stay inside forever. Their shared passion for history spurred them to research and interview the locals until they'd compiled enough historic material to start leading tours. Today, their tours can teach something new even to locals.
The Vonderheides continue to assemble a team of outdoor guides certified in CPR and first aid who all bear a well-researched knowledge of area wildlife and history. These experts lead two-hour scenic tours through the historic harbor. Starting each excursion with a brief paddling lesson, they put first-timers at ease with basic instruction and an amiable demeanor, unlike guides who rely only on their convincing Captain Ahab impressions. Excursions begin at the Spa Creek headwaters in Truxtun Park and lead participants into open-harbor waters to drift in full view of the state capitol building, the US Naval Academy, and historic Eastport. Trips peak at the City Dock, where participants receive a break to take photos and rest. On the return trip, guides field open-ended questions about city history such as presidential visits, the crabbing and oystering trade, and whether George Washington had to swim using floaties.
