Salon Atelier's rose-colored door opens each day because of the efforts of owners Julia Hartman and Cynthia Newsome. Julia's career started 20 years ago when she studied cosmetology at Schilling Douglas School of Hair Design. After her prowess as a stylist, nail technician, and aesthetician landed her work at a salon, she became a brand specialist for Aveda Hair Care and MAC Cosmetics. That's when she started to miss working in a salon—a longing that inspired her to start Salon Atelir with Cynthia Newsome.
Meanwhile, Cynthia's 30 years of experience started at the Annapolis Beauty Academy. She worked in salons and spas, and even opened two of her own. In addition to traveling as an educator and platform artist, she won several awards as a colorist. Together, Julia and Cynthia lead a team of hairstylists, nail artists, and aestheticians. They also use products by Davines—an Italian company dedicated to sustainability and the Renaissance tradition that inspired Michelangelo to paint shampoo bottles on the Sistine Chapel.
Vincent Wright snipped his first bang in his uncle’s barbershop in 1963, and that bit of creativity went on to became his lifelong passion. He later went on to study at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London, perfecting his styling techniques so much that he was invited to join the faculty. Eventually, he returned to Maryland, where he opened Ascension Salon and Spa in 1988.
And his shears haven’t slowed down since. He and his team of stylists trim, style, and color hair, while their aesthetician allies cleanse skin with facials or paint nails in lacquer, Shellac, or tiny oil portraits of Renaissance beauties. On the spa side, massages knead away tension in 30- to 90-minute sessions and aromatherapy treatments extend calm feelings into the air you breathe.
Amid blush-pink walls, Whit's End Salon & Spa gives its team of stylists 3,000 square feet of elbow room—and they use it to keep their guests feeling beautiful with a head-to-toe menu of services. Hair experts armed with Redken products brighten locks with color treatments, and weave hair into elegant updos or alluring fruit baskets. Nail technicians adorn fingers and toes with coats of chip-resistant shellac polish, while aestheticians erase signs of aging or acne with Dermalogica salves. Waxing, spray or UV tanning, and make-up applications add the final flourish to a new look.
At Gossip Salon & Day Spa, you'll get more than a haircut, a makeup application, or a massage?you'll get an atmosphere of friendly ease. The staff adopts the original meaning of the word gossip?folks as far back as 1014 used the word to mean a close friend. It was only later that it took on a more pernicious denotation, though it always kept the connotation of comfortable chatter. At the salon, stylists mainly stick to gossiping about new tools, techniques, and products that'll help clients look runway-ready.
Inside the welcoming confines, the stylists, aestheticians, manicurists and massage therapists chat amiably with clients, consulting them on their desired look and lifestyle before trimming their hair into classic and on-trend cuts or shaping their brows into their favorite parallelogram. Gossip Salon & Day Spa offers a full menu of nail services, from spa mani-pedis to gel and pink-and-white sets to French polish. They also practice their approach outside their salon, participating regularly in community outreach and charitable events.
At Keith Harris Salon, the stylists and aestheticians boast extensive experience in their fields, and it shows in the attentive services they provide. In addition to haircuts, the salon offers a number of intensive haircare services, including demi-permanent waves, formal updos, and professional hair coloring.
The salon’s staff also performs a range of refreshing skincare treatments. The rejuvenating vitamin C facial employs antioxidants to diminish signs of aging, sun damage, and motorcycling full-speed through lush jungles, helping to restore skin to a more youthful radiance. A special gentleman’s facial includes a shoulder-and-neck massage and moisturizing mask.
The stylists at Xtreme Hair Salon firmly believe that a good haircut translates to a good mood. They've been cheering clients for more than 12 years at their respective stations, flanked by warm, sand-colored walls and products from Wella, Sebastian and Kenra. Each of their appointments commences with a consultation, which outlines aesthetic goals before anyone reaches for the scissors. Because the staff constantly adds to their education by attending workshops and physics lectures on the pigtail constant, visitors can trust in their ever-evolving expertise.
Every stylist onsite has different specializations, including razor cuts, updos, and custom coloring. However, the salon's services aren't limited to the scalp; employees can also wax unwanted hair, apply cosmetics for special occasions, and airbrush bodies with sunless spray tans.
