Fred Astaire Dance Studio's highly experienced instructors instill the subtle elegance of waltzes, fox trots, and tangos into the dancing gams. Private introductory lessons school feet in a choice of 14 styles during 20-minute sessions, as individuals or couples dance over the basics of ballroom dance, dance-floor etiquette, and surgical options available for second left feet. Interspersed with private sessions, group classes encourage amateur terpsichoreans to test out their skills with fellow frolickers during 40 minutes of sashaying and socializing. By the end of their introductory education, students whirl and waltz through the studio's spacious dancing environment with more confidence than the Lord of the Dance at an Irish nightclub.
Owned by veteran coaches Julie and Dan Witenstein, Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics and Dance offers instruction in different types of kinesthetic coordination for beginning and intermediate performers age 6 months and up. Inside a 24,000-square-foot facility furnished with a range of equipment, students learn acrobatic fundamentals in a variety of gymnastics classes, 45–60 minutes each. Sessions range from the toddler-friendly Tumble Tots to the more advanced Dynamites, where pupils learn how to execute cartwheels while clutching sticks of TNT. Enroll budding Baryshnikovs in one of the studio's ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, or Broadway dance classes, and watch as they develop the twirling skills necessary to blend oversize smoothies. Check the schedule for a full list of course offerings. During Kids Night Out, parents drop their children off for an evening of supervised frolicking, freeing themselves for a night of relaxation and freely pronouncing the word D-E-N-T-I-S-T. Kids Night Out is for children age 3–13 and occurs on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 6–10 p.m. Children must be toilet trained.
Big cat Terry Schmoyer and his grooving kittens pound Fatcat Ballroom and Dance Company’s 5,800-square-foot floating hardwood floor with a variety of dance styles. Friday and Saturday group lessons begin at 7:30 p.m. each night, tangoing, waltzing, and swinging along for 45 minutes. The first class covers basic steps, and the second half works through more challenging dance patterns and introduces basic levitation. The Saturday-night party rewards class graduates with three hours of lively music, snacks, and ample space to practice new moves. Three 60-minute private lessons furnish solo shakers with in-depth technical instruction. Whether quickstepping through the foxtrot or preparing jaw muscles to clench rose stems throughout an extended tango, students easily gain and retain formal elegance thanks to traditional long-form teaching methods.
Since 2008, Dance Doctors has been committed to transforming students of all skill levels into confident, capable dancers. Dance Doctors’ professional instructors teach classes at two locations—a dance studio in Surprise and another in Mesa—providing easier access for students who have busy schedules or keep waking up in strange places. Instructors teach waltz, swing, and salsa steps to beginners and experts alike, and they also schedule Zumba dance-fitness classes that are set to upbeat latin music with a BPM of at least 1000.
When Christine Lulek left her professional ballet career, she searched for something to fill the void. She eventually discovered and fell in love with Pilates, particularly because the intense core workouts reminded her of the exercises she performed back in her dancing days. She worked in different studios and trained with many teachers until, in 2005, she felt ready to own her own Pilates school. She bought Fitness Dynamics Studio from its owner, moved it to a larger location so she could augment its Pilates courses with dance classes, and began sharing her lifelong love of exercise with students.
Now, six additional teachers—with certifications ranging from STOTT rehabilitative Pilates to Zumba and turbo kickboxing—join Christine to supplement her courses. Together, the team fills six days a week with high-energy fitness classes, relegating all low-energy fitness classes, such as Power Napping, to Sunday afternoons.
