Jan Wellendorf?s passion for karate began in 1963, when he first studied techniques from Japan, China, and Korea. Now a 10th-degree black belt, Jan has molded these experiences into his own style of karate?sanshinkai. At Karate International, more than 70 black belts teach Jan?s methods at five locations, where they help students use Eastern-inspired skills to control themselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. Geared toward pupils of all ages, Karate International?s programs also emphasize cross-training, which can incorporate everything from judo?s throwing techniques to the pizza-eating regimen of ninja turtles.
Although the art of taekwondo may have origins thousands of years into Korea's past, Master Michael Wegmann and his wife Julia inject a modern approach at Vision Martial Arts. Together, they teach effective techniques to kids, women, and men, imparting equally valuable lessons in self-defense, exercise, and mental discipline. They run their six academies with help from a team of trained instructors, who all focus on developing mentor-like relationships with their students through personal attention and powerful speeches delivered atop school desks. At select locations, they also teach a form of kickboxing similar to krav maga.

When Roald Dahl wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he imagined a much-coveted golden ticket that granted access to myriad wonders and unveiled the inner workings of an entire industry. MetaBody created a real-life version of that ticket with the MetaBody Yoga & Fitness Pass, though it applies to fitness instead of candy. The pass grants access not to a single gym but to classes at a variety of local studios, specializing in everything from yoga to boot camp. With the freedom to move from location to location, students can sample different regimens, instructors, and styles of exercise to cobble together a program that fits their needs and goals. MetaBody's nutritionists supplement class packages by coaching clients in healthy eating, recipe cooking, and speed-reading nutrition-fact labels.
Cary Yoga and Kickboxing challenges both body and mind. During high-intensity kickboxing sessions, groups of students jab, hook, and roundhouse kick their way to a healthier existence. A combination of martial arts, boxing, and other fighting forms, kickboxing classes aim to build strength and increase self-awareness, as well. Meanwhile, the facility divides its yoga offerings into two different programs: power Vinyasa and sweat and detox. The latter program revolves around poses that improve the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems, helping to expel toxins.
