Every October, the quiet vegetables fields at Bastiao Farms come alive with the laughter and shrieks of the annual Halloween festival. On one side of the grounds, a motor-powered train makes its way through the haunted corn maze, a massive, growing labyrinth supplemented by three additional corn and hay-bale mazes plus a Halloween-themed pumpkin patch. In other areas of the grounds, children and adults alike can navigate historically engaging sights that include a one-room schoolhouse and a scaled-down Wild West town featuring wooden saloons, storefronts, inns, and a covered wagon that secretly dreams of becoming a hardtop.
Largely self-taught, Shannon Jane Morgan has spent the last 19 years firing up her furnaces and creating delicate, one-of-a-kind works of glass art as the owner and founder of Girl Glass. Her pieces include gracefully curved vases; pigment-dappled paperweights; and whimsical, translucent pumpkins. In private classes, Morgan shares her years of carefully cultivated expertise with students, delving into the nuances of molten glass with tutorials on blowing, shaping, and creating goblets strong enough to survive an operatic high note.
The 17-strong staff at Sattva Yoga, Pilates & Ayurveda brings an abundance of experience and certifications to each class, whether yoga, Pilates, or Barre. KCRA awarded the wellness emporium the title of Best Pilates Studio in 2010 and nominated it as a finalist for Best Yoga Studio in 2011. The team gears its yoga classes toward helping participants achieve tranquility, while directing their Pilates focus toward strengthening core muscles both in clients and in apples. They also teach two variations of Booty Barre, one meant to augment a Pilates regimen with its cardio component, and one that builds on both yoga and Pilates with long, fluid dance movements.
According to Aerie Yoga's feature in the Roseville Press Tribune, instructors Angie and Kendra wanted a "more playful and fun" approach to yoga and fitness. After some careful thought and planning, the duo decided to outfit a studio with hammock-like apparatuses, which they now use to help trainees master all manner of poses and inversions. The apparatuses—which can turn physiques fully upside-down—allow students to stretch deeply, and also offer support to those who can't perform yoga due to ailments such as arthritis.
Angie and Kendra welcome students of all ages and experience levels to test-drive this unconventional approach to fitness. And in that spirit, they aim to create a laidback atmosphere where light chatting and falconry calls are just as welcomed as silent meditation.
Trained volunteer guides have led more than 125,000 children through Safetyville USA’s model town since it opened in 1984. The one-hour safety and health tours immerse preschool through third-grade students in learning scenarios. For instance, kids learn to cross a street safely by looking left and the other left. They also explore model police, fire, and sheriff stations while learning about fire and traffic safety. Health tours focus on nutrition, exercise, first aid, and hygiene. Picnic tables are available after the tours.
Hardwood floors, exposed brick, lofted ceilings, and paneled windows make Yoga Shala's practice room feel like a hip art gallery. Within this space, instructors help students sculpt stronger, more flexible bodies. Though the instructors welcome students of all experience and fitness levels to every class, they help students reach specific goals and shelves by teaching three yoga styles. Vinyasa classes, with their continuous series of flowing postures, provide a powerful and strengthening practice. Proceeding at a comparatively slower pace, Yin yoga focuses on stretching the body's connective tissues. Kundalini classes emphasize an equal balance of breathing, movement, meditation, and chanting.
