As a 23-year-old junior, Tom Hatten didn’t spend his evenings at the raucous parties or ice-cream socials associated with college life. Instead, he’d spend the waning hours of his evenings waiting by the dryer for the last batch of towels before collapsing into bed. In the morning, he would lug them to Mountainside Fitness, the gym he opened as a student that he has thrown all his energy into maintaining ever since.
Today, the humble 4,800-square-foot space has bloomed into nine gyms that average a sweeping 41,000 square feet. Tom’s vision of creating a friendly neighborhood gym that greets each guest with a warm towel underscores every decision he makes for the different locations, from the colorful kid-care spaces to the entertaining group fitness classes. Personal trainers plan regimens tailored to each client, helping them lose weight, build muscle, or target the muscles that will help build a better golf game. Clients can create their own routines with the help of cardio and weight machines, or explore the different amenities at each location, such as saunas, rock-climbing walls, and indoor basketball courts.
Funtasticks Family Fun Park entices visitors of all ages with abundant play areas along with racing, riding, and sporty attractions. Guests can test their aim by precisely putting through one of two 18-hole miniature golf courses, sniping opponents in a high-tech laser-tag facility, or hitting softball or baseball homers in a batting cage that launches orbs between 40 and 70 mph from an accusatory foam pointer finger. There's also an indoor laser tag arena that allow up to 30 players per game.
Electric bumper boats come equipped with water guns for squirt-attacks against other seafarers, and go-karts navigate a racetrack's lengthy stretches and curves. The video arcade's plentitude of games rewards players who can later collect prizes, and Kiddie Land sequesters a bouncy castle, rookie go-kart track, and mini roller coaster geared to younger attendees. Funtasticks accommodates organized group outings and birthday parties with an extensive selection of packages.
Justine Miller has always done her best to preserve memories. As a young girl, she would watch the Christmas lights on neighbors' houses, blinking hard to hold onto the festive images and etch them into her mind. Today, she still does her best to capture the magic that happens in everyday life. Instead of using expensive lighting equipment or posing her subjects in elaborate scenes, she shoots outside in the natural light and encourages her clients to act naturally so she can capture their real emotions. That may explain why some of her favorite photo subjects are people at their happiest: brides on their wedding day, children at play, newborn babies, and adults lounging in extra-large diapers. Though she prefers to hold sessions outside, she does schedule studio sessions for clients upon request. After a session, she performs light editing on frames before posting them in an online gallery, which clients can peruse to select the images they’d like to print.

Bowling is the great social equalizer—a common ground where grizzled undercover clowns, blue-collar English lords, LARPer librarians, big and tall lingerie models, hordes of hive-minded hipsters, and the other two social demographics that comprise America can unite in common cause and topple a gaggle of stuck-up, inanimate wooden pins. Brunswick has been a household name in this egalitarian pastime almost since the beginning, with a company history that dates back to the 19th century, providing classic American good times to all manner of patrons across the country. And with today's Groupon tying the room together, you'll get to play two games (up to a $10 value) in its hallowed halls wearing a pair of freshly disinfected bowling shoes (up to a $4.39 value).
