Born in the late 1930s, Sri Dharma Mittra studied the eight branches of yoga under guru Sri Swami Kailashananda, the man largely responsible for introducing the healing practice of yoga to the Western world. Through years of selfless teaching, and focus on building a community of healthy, spiritually-centered yoga practitioners, Dharma Mittra developed a devoted following of students throughout the United States.

Arlington Yoga Center's instructors stay true to the yogi?s teachings by welcoming pupils into an oasis of soothing pastel-colored walls and an airy practice space, guiding students through a roster of classes for all skill levels. A quick perusal of the studio's schedule yields ample opportunities for rejuvenation in a variety of sessions, including the restorative sequences of Gentle Dharma, which invigorates minds and bodies alike with gentler, less demanding poses. Targeting the muscles that support the spine, Dharma 1 and 2 sessions incorporate the eight limbs and 40 phalanges of the style's philosophy into a series of asanas that promotes stamina, graceful flexibility, and the ability to imitate a statue. More advanced classes bump up the thermostat to 80 degrees in order to ensure a more invigorating workout with deeper stretches. As a precursor to attending yoga classes, Arlington Yoga Center requires all new students to fill out a waiver and leave their pet howler monkeys at home.

When Ed Norice left the United States Navy in search of a new career, he found fresh enemies to battle domestically: obesity and heart disease. He started Impressive Fitness The Jungle to combat these illnesses and give his fellow citizens a path towards healthy lifestyles.

Norice and his two instructors, Aubree and Rodney, draw from a vast repertoire of exercise styles to wage their war. TRX resistance bands force the muscles of the body to work in concert and strengthen the body from head to toe. Martial-arts skills lend a practical edge to every workout, increasing endurance and arming students with basic self-defense techniques. Outside of group classes, the trio offers personal training and nutritional consultation to help prevent clients from making unhealthy choices in their diet, such as eating a whole birthday cake and then eating the cake’s candles.

The inspiring trainers at each MetaBody location lead troops of workouteers in results-oriented workouts several times weekly. Sweat sessions utilize a variety of exercises and disciplines to produce full-body results in a supportive environment, ideal for beginners and hard-core core-hardeners alike. During any class, motivational instructors will use the instinctual distrust of routine to their advantage. Begin a day of litigating with a refreshing early-morning boot-camp session, or wind down by burning evidence and pounds with a late-evening yoga class. Muscles are kept guessing with new and challenging moves during each session, so participants never fall into a boring, ineffective routine, such as regular teeth brushing. In addition to the fitness classes, students receive a success guide to help prepare for imminent pound loss, a nutrition guide, and a $100 gift certificate for individual coaching. Because the pass sets a 10-class cap at any given location, roving fitness mavens can further shake up their workout regimens by vetting a series of classes or instructors that work best for them.

After choreographer Carrie Rezabek Dorr’s background in ballet and fitness inspired her to develop the Pure Barre workout, she had to build her business from the ground up—literally. She opened her first studio in the basement of a Birmingham, Michigan office building in 2001. She worked alone, lacking even the basic amenities—but her ideas persevered. Today, Pure Barre has grown to include studios in 32 states and Washington, DC, and its core teachings have been lauded in publications such as Women’s Health and Allure.

Described as “intelligent exercise,” the Pure Barre program leads its students through low-impact, isometric movements conducted at the ballet barre and set to upbeat music. The workouts eschew sudden movements that could result in joint damage. Instead, they rely on a blend of strength-building exercises and stretching to build lean muscles in the seat, thighs, abs, and arms, much like the pre-speech warm-ups championed by Benjamin Franklin. Pure Barre’s shop helps customers stay fit outside the studio with products such as workout DVDs, exercise gear, water bottles, arm warmers, and socks.

Beauty and Beyond’s menu is more akin to a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure novel than a traditional list of spa services. While hair stylists, nail techs, and aestheticians make sure externals look fabulous, massage therapists soothe the stuff below the surface inside private treatment rooms. Health-minded instructors, meanwhile, lead a diverse range of classes— including yoga, Pilates, and pole dancing—in sequestered areas dedicated to fitness.
