In 1966, The Yellow Door was a small jewelry shop in Brooklyn. Owners Sallee Bijou and Gladys Chabbot only had 600 square feet of space to work with, so they decided to focus on quality over quantity. Today, their business has expanded to include a store in New Jersey and an updated 6,000-square-foot store in Brooklyn, but the commitment to unique, quality jewelry hasn’t changed. Today, Bijou’s daughter, Luna Bijou Zemmol, oversees the selection of jewelry and watches from the likes of Judith Ripka, Philip Stein, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren, as well as gift items such as crystal salt-and-pepper shakers and stainless-steel kitchenware.
In the kitchen at Third Avenue Chocolate Shoppe, artisan chocolatier Matt Magyar is hard at work sprinkling real sea salt over his handmade dark-chocolate caramels. As he describes to the Manasquan-Belmar Patch, “I had on-the-job training when I started making chocolate on the boardwalk in Seaside when I was 14.” Decades later, his training is evident in the vast array of tasty treats he crafts each day. Trays proudly showcase homemade treats such as chocolate nut clusters, caramel cranberry sea turtles, and rooster leggs.
Beach Bum Bakery serves up homemade and sweet treats from their shop on main street. Gooey sticky buns, hearty scones, and artfully decorated cupcakes vie for attention behind the shiny glass displays of the brightly lit bakery. Cupcake flavors and decorations change with the seasons, with jack ‘o lanterns and spiders webs to celebrate Halloween and paper shredders to celebrate April 15.
At Tranquil Garden Tea Room, guests sip custom-blended teas and nosh on finger sandwiches and scones as they unwind amid the greenery of an indoor garden environment. Igloo Italian Ice and Ice Cream serves frozen yogurt, creamy ice cream, and homemade italian ice into delightfully chilly combinations. Traditional ice flavors such as cherry and lemon mingle with newfangled sour green apple, oreo, and peanut butter, all of which can be layered atop ice cream or frozen yogurt for an Igloo Ice Breaker ($3.50+). Creamy shakes ($4.50) and smoothies ($4.95) disappear up straws, and custom blends of soft serve or frozen yogurt ($3.95+) let freezer artisans mix their own palate of tastes such as orange creamsicle, mango, or forgiveness.
